Agreed. The fire dragon was always such a shoehorned plot element that just goes nowhere.

It should have just been ghidorah.

Yeah, the fire dragon bit is just to give the human heroes something to do but a) they're really uninteresting b) defeating Ghidorah and smashing the Kilaaks is a far more satisfying conclusion, and c) anyone watching who did find the astronauts interesting turned on them during the 15 minute long welding sequence.

Or Biollante, for that matter. So many good ideas, such horrible execution. Omori has a tendency to clutter up his scripts with lots of short scenes that do nothing but provide poorly written exposition, with lots of hand-wringing and portentous pronouncements. There is no time for any story or character arcs to really emerge. He is also a very poor director of action sequences, so his films tend to be classic examples of missed opportunities.

(Not that I think DAM is horribly executed, but I do agree with the comments above re: the Fire Monster / destroying the controller sequences).
