The latest trailer makes me wonder if Charlize Theron is playing an android, too.

I don't understand how the two are related...and if they are, wouldn't a successful run for Prometheus (if it has a successful run) BOLSTER the chances of seeing ATMOM?

^GDT is saying that if Prometheus covers a lot of the same ground as ATMOM and does it well then making his film would be pointless.

:(

A lot of artists throughout history have done the same thing - hard at work on a project only to learn that some other artist is further along on something on the same lines, so they abandon it.

I guess they're both kind of similiar. Both involve big alien "gods" that created man and man's eventual encounter with the gods' attack "dogs".

I think it sounds like an excuse to give up on a project that he thinks has become a pipe-dream.

As has been said:
a - a guy whose films use elements of fairy tales, and whose films are based on pre-existing ideas worrying about being called derivative is a little ironic.
b - most people wouldn't make the connection between a space scifi film about the origins of man and an antarctic plot dealing with an ancient civilization
c - derivation/riffing on the ideas others have already done is basically a core part of the creative process and has given us some of the greatest films of all-time.

but you know what they say, excuses are like a$$holes...
