Drive

Finally saw this. Wow. Tied with Rise of the Planet of the Apes for my favorite film last year. Great stuff and Albert Brooks should have gotten a nomination from the Academy for playing this far against type.

And on another note...I'm doing a Creature from the Black Lagoon marathon this week :D

I watched the Lord of the Rings Animated films recently below are my thoughts

The Hobbit- I liked it, I watched it a few times as a child so it's nostolgic for me. Plus Smaug is pretty cool despite looking like a cat and being voiced by a drunk. :P

The Lord of The Rings- I didn't care for this they changed the animation sometimes they passed off live action as animation and the voice acting was terrible.

The Return of the King- Back to the Hobbit style animation, I thought it was okay but got pretty boring in parts.

Yeah I forgot to say that I saw Ides of March last Thursday and I loved it. I'm a political junkie though so I was pretty much the target audience.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon
Still one of my favorite films of all time. The Gillman in this film is an inspired creation. The love triangle between the three leads is suprisingly well done for a sci-fi b movie. The Captain of the Rita is hilarious. The cinematography is gorgeous! Great film. Not perfect, and deff some room for improvement.

I will say that the Creature's trumpet cue gets insanely annoying in this film though.

Revenge of the Creature
I loved this film as a kid but watching it now I can only see it as a luke warm rendetion of the original Creature film. There's a love triangle again, but it's half baked. The Creature himself, is more of a love sick puppy in this film than a supernatural, alien intelligence on par with humans. Just a big, fat, bowl of meh.

The Creature Walks Among Us
This is the most hated film of this trilogy but I love it. The opening is great with the Creature becoming something of an urban legend that occasionally kills or hurts fisherman who venture too far into it's turf. The Gillman seems to be a little more fearsome at first, like he was in the original film.

Things change when after the Gillman recieves his surgery. I know most CFTBL fans hate his look in this film, and it's deff not my fave, but it's a pretty original concept and it allows for further exploration into the Gillman's character. We even get to see him protect innocent animals. He's not a bad guy! Which makes the ending of this film all the more tragic :(

Matinee

This is a near perfect film. Love is an understatement. I think this film, is my version of Hugo or The Artist in some ways...a love letter to a time in film that means a lot to me (Ed Wood is another great film that does this, and I'll probably watch that film later this week)

The Big Boss. Bruce Lee's breakthrough picture. Our hero uncovers a drug-smuggling plot at his place of employment and sets out to make things right, so naturally, a lot of fighting ensues. While it's not all that great of a movie, it's enjoyable enough, and Lee's presence makes it far better than it would be otherwise. As with most other films of its genre (that I've seen), the soundtrack is made up of library cues culled from various sources, and I laughed out loud when I recognized a few snippets of Akira Ifukube's work, including from the first Daimajin. Again, it's not one of the best films you'll ever see, but certainly worth watching for Bruce's dynamic performance.

Real Steel

Pretty decent kids flick. I was pleasently surprised by it. It's not great, or genre defining (i.e. it's not Speed Racer) but the gf and I still had a good time watching it.

The Matrix

I know it's popular to poke fun at the Wachowski Bros. but I've legitmately dug almost everything they've been a part of. Even the Matrix sequels, are spectacular failures. They were TRYING to do something different and unique at the very least unlike most Hollywood sequels these days, you have to respect that.

The Matrix, Speed Racer, V for Vendetta...all fave films of mine and I dug Ninja Assasin for what it was.

Edit* I've never seen The Invasion and have no interest to, so I'll chalk that up to a film that they were a part of that was "bad". Even though many things could have happened after they wrote the script that could have drastically altered the final product.
