What's On Your Cult Film List?

Postby Tyler E. Martin » Sun Jan 08, 2012 7:18 pm

Just now, I ran across , compiled by the authors of the upcoming book 100 Cult Films. Readers and listeners are invited to pitch a favorite of theirs that weren't featured, which may be read on air. A lot of great movies made the list, and I'm a big fan of quite a few of them, as I'm sure a lot of fellow MZers are (Ishirô Honda's Godzilla is rightfully included). I thought I might as well pass this along if any of you feel you should make a case for an overlooked 101st film. :)

I dunno about my own list, but skimming through that one I want to say that some of their choices are too mainstream to be "Cult"....Star Wars!? Seriously?? Edward Sissorhands??

Yeah, Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz felt really out of place to me. Great movies, but not really "cult."

I just perused the list VERY briefly, and it seems like what they are deeming "cult" is something that I would deem "genre defying"

Star Wars, Edward Scissorhands, Casablanca, Wizard of Oz...these aren't CULT movies...these are movies that break through the paradigms of their typical "target" audience and appeal to a broad range of people and defy all logic via their mainstream success.

Cult films, to me, are films that are well-loved by a small group, but never broke into the mainstream and in many ways, that should be considered unfair...Monster Squad might be my all-time cult film.
Gills.

It appears the comments are now closed, so I can't make the suggestion now, but I'm surprised it didn't occur to me before: Where the heck is Billy Jack? That should count as a cult film, right? And it's marvelous. One of my all-time favorite movies.
