I'm literally spazzing out with excitement over the news that Roger Landridge is writing the new Popeye comic!

... and this Bruce Ozella's ability to imitate E.C. Segar's drawing is amazing!

Man, Genshiken is actually a pretty depressing portrait of otaku at times. A lot of which I didn't really notice on the first read through.

Just finished rereading a few Secret Six Issues, dear god i miss this comic. I like the new 52 a good bit overall but losing this series was a tragedy. I pray for this comic to return someday.

I'm only following one series right now: Batman Incorporated!

Grant Morrison's Batman epic might edge out Alan Moore's Swamp Thing as my favorite comic. He gets the character so well.

Looks great and you have me intrigued by comparing this to Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run which is my favorite comic of all time...

And has anyone checked out the new Swamp Thing? I'm curious...but it's not really my thing as they completely did away with everything that Alan Moore did with the character it seems...

They're actually not much a like, it's really hard to describe Morrison's Batman run because it deviates so wildly during its 60+ issue run.

The first arc is kind of dark and brooding, but that's because Batman R.I.P. is a critique on sensationalism and "events" in Batman comics (Like Knightfall and No Man's Land). It tries to reconcile Batman's Silver Age with the Bronze Age (Something every writer before him has ignored). He even brings back the original Joe Chill. It's sloppy in areas, and the weakest part of his run, but its really interesting.

Batman & Robin completely changes that Batman and Robin dynamic, and is probably the most fun I've had reading a comic since Morrison's JLA. It's silly and fun, with Morrison's bizarre twists.

The Return of Bruce Wayne, like RIP is essentially Morrison trying to change Batman's image from a dark lunatic to a heroic adventurist. Which leaves us with Batman Inc., which has about twelve issues or so left to wrap everything up.

As for the new Swamp Thing, I hate Scott Snyder. I think he's a hack. He's writing Batman right now and is essentially bringing the series back to its terrible 90s roots. Yannick Paquette is drawing it though. He's worked with Morrison on the first few issues of Batman Inc., he's got such a knack for color.

Soooo.... Stan Sakai, the man behind my all-time fav comic Usagi Yojimbo, is taking a hiatus from the book to work on his 47 Ronin project. Next week's Usagi issue may be the last for, like, the whole year (or at least late fall or winter).

But, the fact that this baby is being released is a nice consolation prize. It just so happens to collect the year of issues right before I started buying the series a couple of years ago!

When the first issue of kaboom!'s Adventure Time comic came out a few weeks ago my LCS failed to get it. The publisher's pre-orders were sold out, and according to reports the comic was selling like hotcakes everywhere! My LCS is a pretty darn good one, usually very reliable, and they're still trying to get a hold of this book (now in its 3rd printing) for me and apparently many other insistent fans of AT - but, much to my surprise, a local used bookstore that just started selling new comics recently had a single copy of Adventure Time issue #1 on their racks!

I bought it, feeling just a bit guilty knowing that my LCS is still trying to get me the issue. I felt like I was being unfaithful! Oh well, I suppose if they eventually get issue #1 I'll have to buy it again for their efforts (and the fact that the 2nd and 3rd printings have really cool cover art helps).

But enough of my blabbering: just how does Adventure Time the comic book stack up to it's source material, namely, one of the coolest cartoons in ages? After the resounding "meh" I felt towards IDW's Godzilla books (haven't read Legends yet) I must admit some trepidation towards a new licensed book based on something I love. I needn't have worried, because this comic in every way surpassed my expectations! Writer Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics) captures the voice of the characters and the tone of the TV show while at the same time fully understanding the differences in mediums, and, along with artists Shelli Paroline and Brandon Lamb, he fills the pages with all kinds of visual gags and hidden details in the best Mad Magazine tradition. There are even little footnotes at the bottom page margins, one of which is written in code and I'll probably need Google to translate it.

The meat of the comic is 15 pages and a chapter of an ongoing story. It doesn't feel slight or (shudder) "decompressed" at all, but if that isn't enough for you each issue will also have a self-contained 7 page short focusing on one of the cast written and drawn by a guest artist. This issue has a delightful (and somewhat disgusting) story about Tree Trunks done in beautiful watercolors by Aaron Renier.

Got IDW Transformers Collection Hardcover Vol. 2.
I've read Stormbringer and Escalation already, so the Spotlights are what I'm looking forward to. I need to get the rest of these.
