Destroy All Monsters

Seeing it in HD and with the original Japanese audio does make for a more enjoyable viewing - but my main complaints still stand: the movie just isn't as interesting as the other '60s films. The characters aren't compelling and the story is just an sketch to accommodate a few (admittedly awesome) big monster action set pieces.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

TCM showed this video recording of the of the Broadway production last night. It's really, really good. Just how was the Tim Burton version?

I watched Watership Down last night.
It was ok, not a bad way to condense a 500-ish page epic into an hour and a half film...

Limitless I liked this. It wasn't great and had some less than good moments, but overall I think this was pretty good. I think it would make for a pretty good limited issue series of comic books.

The Grey

I liked it, everyone I saw it with didn't. I will warn any of you that are thinking of seeing the film that it's not the Liam Neeson vs. wolf ala Arnold vs. Predator movie that the trailers make it out to be. This movie feels very "literary" to me. Not a bad thing, but it's slow paced, or so I'm told..I hate slow paced openings and movies but I thought the pacing was just fine. The people I saw it with complained about the lack of decent characters and the pacing but this movie felt like a Alien or The Thing to me as far as pacing goes, I was raised on movies that were paced like this.

I will say that Liam's character makes some pretty idiotic choices as the de facto leader. There's a scene involving crossing a ravine that just feels forced, as if the film just needed to kill another character and so it put them all in a stupid situation that no sane person would have thought of

King Kong vs. Godzilla

I love both versions of this film, the Japanese more so. It's probably my favorite Godzilla film depending on which day you ask me. Godzilla has an actual personality in this film...he's an a$$ that you can laugh at at times, and yet, at other times he's terrifying. Plus, I mean...it's probably the best Godzilla design ever so it has that working for it too ( I know Legendary will probably pull more from the Kiryu and Hesei Godzilla designs but I kind of wish they'd just bring back the 62 suit with some minor tweaks...maybe make the face a little more ferocious, the brows a little bigger so that his eyes are covered in shadow at times...give his tail a crocodillian like paddle at the tip).

Toho's two King Kong films are absolute wonders. I could watch them at anytime :D

Oh...and Giant Octopus!!!!

50/50

So yeah. Teared up occasionally once or twice during the first hour, started consistently crying right around the actual hour mark, then bawled my eyes out for the last twenty, thirty minutes. Messed me the f*ck up, man. Fantastic movie though. Very realistic.

Labyrinth

I've been meaning to see Jim Henson's fantasy fantasy films for a while.

I really like this film. It feels very episodic, like many a proper fantasy quest (Wizard of Oz, Thief of Bagdad), and the various creatures all have great personalities and are brought to life with gusto. Jennifer Connelly (who apparently hasn't aged since this movie) and David Bowie are both good in the non-puppet roles. The only thing that really ages the movie is the synth-heavy score.

The LOTR Extended Editions

Over the past three weekends my gf and I have watched one of these films per weekend. Finished Return of the King today.

Lets see, where to start. I've only seen these films once each before and I don't recall liking them too much.

Fast forward X amount of years and my opinions have changed actually. I found these films cold, lacking a real "Han Solo" type character the first time I saw them. Coupled with the over the top, sachrine melodrama and I just wasnt a fan. Now that I'm older, less influenced by hormones and rage, I was able to enjoy these films for what they are.

I still think the battle scenes are too long and self-indulgent (self indulgent is one of the key terms I'd used to desribe Peter Jackson's films) and no matter which version you see...Return of the King is WAY too long. And I f'n hate all of the different endings. Just pick one Peter I don't care if the book had all of those scenes in it. The Fly ends when Brundlefly dies....it doesn't go on for 40 minutes afterwords.

Still, good films. Doubt I will own them and I don't think I'll watch them more than every 10-15 years but I did enjoy them.

Dolls

Eh, not very good...specially for a Stuart Gordon film.

Severance

Again, kind of dissapointed in this after seeing the amazingly bleak Black Death

Eh, that's all for now. Gonna watch The Blob remake and The Howling tonight. I need some gory monster fun. Been a while since I've seen either of those films...if I have any thoughts worth posting I'll post them here
