The Batman and Robin appreciation thread!

Postby planetxleader » Sun Jan 29, 2012 2:10 pm

Y'know, Monster Zero has sorta died down again a little bit. I think it's high time to spark things back up. And by that, I mean introduce an idea that's sure to have people to "FFFFFFF!"

And no, I'm not honestly baiting. I'm honestly putting it out there for people to prove why this wonderful movie is so bad. You know what I think? I think people fall too much into the "it's cool to bash this movie" trap. Honestly. I think hating on this movie is a bandwagon.

Because 1.) The story and narrative are pretty standard and solid. There's honestly nothing broke about it. 2.) The art direction is zany and creative and rich and yet still keeps the unique look of Gotham. 3.) Yes it's goofy and corny, but it's obviously meant to be, much like the '60s Batman, so where's the beef?

Honestly, the only bad thing in the movie is the puns. And they were supposed to be that way. The only leeway I can honestly give too is that Clooney is a weak Batman compared to anyone else to play the character (doesn't bother me, but yeah I can't deny that he makes no effort to change his mannerisms behind the cowl).

Maybe it's a bad "Batman" movie, in that it craps all over the source material and reduces Bane to a comic sidekick, but that's about it. If you like the '60s Batman but hate this, tell me why.

Does the movie NEED to be ironic to be enjoyable? Yes, it's silly. Yes, the puns are [deliciously] awful. Yes, it's merchandise-driven but it's still entertaining as hell and, honestly, it at least works as a film - the same cannot be said of, say, the Star Wars prequels. Those are fundamentally broken. Batman & Robin works because it is unabashedly silly. Also, I think the movie looks gorgeous. Call me crazy but I love the lighting they use here. I totally dig the neon look juxtaposed with the art deco architecture.

And yeah, I totally agree with Josh. After I finally saw the 60s Batman movie (and loved it), I also don't get what makes it so superior. I can think of a couple moments that were rather satirical but, uh, most of it just comes off as absurdist and goofy. And amazing.

Aside: Bad puns are basically a job requirement where I work, sooooo.....

If anything I'm going to give planetxleader a standing ovation for having the balls to call out fans of the Bat-West who also hate this one. I'm not a fan of either, but that just makes too much sense. I still don't see the difference between this and Bat-West outside of production values.

I haven't read Morrison's take on Batman and Robin yet. I'm intrigued that the new Robin is Batman's son and Batman himself is now Dick Grayson.

Eh, from what I remember, Poison Ivy's plan was to let her mutant plant overtake the earth after humanity dies out. So I never saw a problem with that...

I never really saw a problem with Robin or Batgirl. Robin especially, since the whole competitive relationship he had with Bats was well-done, IMO. Batgirl, I will admit, was a little tacked-on, but it didn't bother me, and it certainly wasn't a step down in writing compared to other action-movie fair of the time.

And I love the art direction, I though the movie was just wonderful to look at, so I can chalk that down to opinion and say "okay," if somebody doesn't like the bright neon look of Schumacher's Batmans, but I think they're groovy.

I'll have to go watch the commentary, but I have seen the snippet on Youtube where Schumacher apologizes for Batman and Robin, saying his intention was only "to provide entertainment." It was so sad to hear those words; he did entertain me!

My god, read a '50s or early '60s Batman comic and tell me that the TV show didn't perfectly capture how delightfully insane the relationship between Batman and Robin is. Of course, it's been labeled a homosexual relationship by some but that's almost too quaint and sober an explanation. It's weird.
