Eden of the East Movie I: The King of Eden - really cool, I love this story. My only shame is the obvious (THIS IS TWO PARTS) and the fact that the animation (which is good) didn't try to do anything more for a theatrical release. Still a very fun film, but really only recommended if you've seen the 11 episode tv show.

Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages

This 1922 docu-drama is chock full of historical re-enactments and demonic imagery that made it quite controversial on its release, but I wonder if the movie's central premise that all of this belief in the supernatural is just ignorant hokum wasn't just as controversial back then?

Highlander

I typically don't like "action" movies. I grew up on them, but I find them to be a little boring now but Highlander, has just enough substance to keep me insterested.

The first film is the only one that's worth watching fyi...

It all depends on the action movie...just like any other genre...First Blood, Highlander, Predator...

Videodrome
Inspired by the release of Godzilla from the Criterion collection I browsed their website and saw that Videdrome was one that they also gave the Criterion treatment to and knowing that it was available via Netflix streaming I decided to give it a watch. I didn't like it. Not because it's not good, I think it was good, I didn't like it because I don't like inhumanity. It just bums me out. Also this might have been the first body horror movie I ever watched in its enitirety and I don't think it's a genre that holds much interest for me.

The Shawshank Redemption

There are many words I could use to describe this film. I could use enchanting, comic, pyschological, emotional, dramatic, beautiful: the list can just go on. Yet all I want to say is was that it was a tall drink of water...and yes...I enjoyed every minute of it.

Seven Chances

Making time to watch the rest of the Blu-Rays I got over the holidays. This Buster Keaton film isn't one of the four or so people usual mention when they pick out his best features (usually given as The General, Sherlock Jr., The Navigator, and Our Hospitality) but if it doesn't reach quite those levels it's just a little below them. This is a terrifically funny film. Keaton's tops in my book.

The Machine Girl

Directed by the same guy that directed Tokyo Gore Police, this movie is not as "outlandish?" as the latter. Yeah, there's a lot of blood, but nowhere near as much as TGP, and the story is much better and has somewhat of a purpose. The main character's brother gets into trouble with and is killed by a Yakuza family. The authorities say it was a suicide, but after reading her brother's diary, in which she found a list of people he wanted to kill, she became suspicious. On her quest to find the truth, she is attacked by one family, then is kidnapped and has her arm severed by the family that killed her brother. She goes to her brother's friend's family, who was killed alongside her brother and they become friends, vowing to hunt the gang down and avenge their loved ones' deaths. The husband fabricates a large gatling gun for the girl to attach to her severed arm, and the fun begins.

Yeah, it's dumb. But the story is far more believable than TGP, and more enjoyable. I never really saw myself getting into this kind of stuff, but it's okay. Not something I would drop over twenty bucks on a regular basis for, but definitely something to "kill" a few bucks for. (Yeah, I know; that was a really bad joke)

Mikadroid: Robokill Beneath Disco Club Layla

Too bad the rest of the movie wasn't as cool as the title.

Correction: Tokyo Gore Police was directed by The Machine Girl's special effects director, Yoshihiro Nishimura. The Machine Girl was directed by Noboru Iguchi.

Gantz 2

Really disapointed with this film....this film did not stick the landing at all. Decent fight scenes though, worth a rent for that alone I suppose.
