I haven't thought about it super hard but if I had to make a top... whatever list of modern Ultra Kaiju, this guy would DEFINITELY make it:

Image

KELBEAM! Or Cherubim is also a reasonable translation, oddly enough. Anyway, yeah, he's got a classic, simple, elegant design and he's such an ass. Loved the episode of Mebius where he was mind-controlling Arstron to do his bidding!

Oh, and his roar is really sweet. Sad they jettisoned his more unique roar in favor of a really bland, generic version for the Ultra Brothers movie (though you can hear the correct roar in Ultra Galaxy Legends).

Hands-down my favorite Ultra monster EVER:

Image

ZETTON.

Just... he's such an unstoppable juggernaut that Ultramen are actively afraid of him. I love it! My favorite appearance of his is in Ultraman Max, as that's where I was first introduced to the character and his destruction scenes are most excellent!

I'm just here to rep my bro Gesura.

Underwater-Chocolate-Eating-Fish Monsters are not represented very well in the mainstream, but Gesura keeps it 100.

I couldn't care less about other Ultra kaiju, but Gesura's uniqueness just really gets me. And I love marine biology, so it's always cool seeing a rare aquatic kaiju. I was glad he was able to make a comeback in that recent film as King Gesura - which is a fabulous update to the original design. Looks better in every way.

Gesura is also the only Bandai figure worth owning. Because it is the only figure they have made after Gesura, the true King of the Monsters.

Gesura has a face of love.

But...

Don't F with Gesura.

Ultraman don't got sh*t on Gesura.

I rate my Ultra shows/films based on how much Gesura is in them. If Gesura isn't in it, then I don't give a F.

The King Gesura suit IS pretty amazing. Definitely one of the best updates of the recent string of updates.

I think Gesura does the whole aquatic kaiju lizard thing pretty well. I think he has enough weird stuff going on to keep him from being too boring. I mean, I love some of the basic kaiju (Bemler and the like) as well.

You know another kaiju that could use a comeback? DREAMGILAS.

What's that, you ask? What the hell is a Dreamgilas? WELL LET ME SHOW YOU.

Image
Image

Basically, this Superbeast from Ultraman Ace episode 35 is invading a boy's dreams, terrorizing him and spraying him down with water. The real-world result is that the boy has a bed-wetting problem and Dreamgilas - no joke - manifests in the real world through the pee stain on the sheet. Like, the stain disappears, Dreamgilas shows up for real and when he disappears, the stain has returned. Wtffffffff. Later, in the battle with TAC, his water-spraying ability is apparently replaced with the ability to spray BLOOD.

The weirdness of the bed-wetting plot aside, dream-invading monsters are some of the coolest so I'd love to see this guy show up again one day, no matter how much of a long shot that is.
