I was watching The Creature from the Black Lagoon this morning, and it got me wondering, what do you all think is the best "man in suit" monster brought to life on the big screen.
By "best" I mean, the most flawless in terms of realism.
If it was our "favorite" most of us would say Godzilla I'm sure.
Now, at first I want to say, I think the best is the original Creature from the Black Lagoon. BUT. That seems a tad bit, too conservative and non-progressive. Its still ONE of the best, but the best?? I don't know, surely "the best" title is one that gets thrown around by old timey fans who don't like anything past the their own child hood. There had to be other monsters portrayed by men in suits that looked even more convincing on the big screen.
The more I thought of it, the more there was only one real choice for me...
Pumpkinhead. That's right folks. Pumpkinhead. There are scenes of the titular monster in that film that are jaw dropping. It just looks so life-like at times. Wow. Winston did such an amazing job on that film. It helps that he directed it so he knew exactly how to shoot the creature on film.
Giger's Alien would probably be my number two tied with the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Edit* Oh, and The Faun from Pan's Labrynth actually might be my number two...followed by "Wink" from Hellboy 2 and Abe Sapien....then the Creature, then the Alien. Again, it helps that Del Toro has a background in making his own effects so he knows how to shoot his monsters to make them the most life like.
Here's my list:
Pumpkinhead
The Faun
Wink
Abe Sapien
The Creature from the Black Lagoon
The Alien
