I don't think this stuff NEEDS to be layered or deep to be entertaining or good. What Ultraman Ace and Taro lack in social complexity they make up for by being utterly batshit, something that I find to be delightful and something that falls very much in line with my own style of filmmaking. I like it when the genre can tackle heavier issues but I don't think the lack of that approach makes these other shows inherently inferior at all. In fact, I PREFER Ultraman Ace to Ultraman, as much as I respect the latter, simply because its style jives better with me. Is that wrong? Do I just have poor taste?
As for Zero, not that it needs being repeated but I really came away quite satisfied. I thought the visuals were an improvement over the previous film by being a combination of techniques as opposed to ALL CG ALL THE TIME and I honestly liked all the characters. Maybe the film could have been twenty minutes longer to flesh them out a bit more (the deleted scenes contain some nice humanizing moments) but I connected with them just fine in the final product. But what, I have to ask, was so awful about the costume designs? Apart from the Space Pirates' beards, because I recognize that (even though it doesn't bother me). I've seen a couple people complain about the costume designs but I don't recall ever seeing anyone say WHY they're bad. I thought they were all perfectly functional.
