War Horse

Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. We follow a horse through many owners during WWI. It's a lot more brutal and dark than the trailers and TV spots make it out to be, but the violence is kept fairly bloodless or tastefully hidden for younger audience members.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo -
Really enjoyed this. Pretty faithful to the book, and such a well done film.
I really need to finish watching the original film adaptation.

The experience was slightly tainted by a group of old people who wouldn't stop talking during the film. I've never had that problem with elderly people in theaters, but dang...

The Manster

Title makes me think of a man/hamster hybrid but that's not really what the movie is about. It's my second time watching this film and I love its mix of Toho sci-fi and schlocky 50's American B-Movie.

Also, the mad scientist's lab assistant is HOT

Alien

I love this film. It's been years since I have seen it, so it was almost like watching it for the first time, I'm in love! Watched and read a few commentaries and I had never really given thought to the "sexual" references related with the Xenomorphs. All I can do is laugh and say "wow".

Alien 3

It was ok. Maybe decent would be a better word, but I personally liked the first two films myself.

The Dark Knight

Still a personal favorite of mine, just in time to get me even more excited for the upcoming film. :D

All I asked from Spring Bears Love is for Bae Doona to be adorable and be a film that's - at minimum - just enjoyable enough to justify watching Bae Doona be cute in it. Bae Doona delivered in spades but the movie, though it started off in a promising manner (like many Japanese comedies I love) with some fun characters, some silly fantasy sequences, and even a light art history plot thread that I really loved (*art major*). BUT THEN it gets about halfway through its run when it suddenly remembers, "OH, THAT'S RIGHT! I'M A KOREAN ROMANTIC COMEDY!" Cue LOTS OF SLOW MOTION and MORE SAP THAN EVEN I CAN HANDLE (and I'm a total sucker for sap!) and LET'S PLAY AN ENTIRE ROMANCE POP ALBUM THROUGHOUT THE LAST THIRD OF THE FILM. Wow. I don't have a ton of experience with Korean romantic comedies (and I probably wouldn't have given this a second thought were it not for my love for Bae Doona) but based of my limited experience with them, it scares me to know that this is apparently the norm. Lure you in with the cute and quirky first half and then ruin the second half with over-sap. Boo! I mean, I EXPECTED harmless, cotton candy fluffertainment but I guess I was hoping for something better than... well, better than that. And to make it worse, it's actually a really pretty film to look at! Between Japanese movies and Korean movies, I think the Koreans made off with the better cinematographers while the Japanese retained the common sense not to bog down silly films like this with all that extra stuff. Pffff.

Okay, I'll stop rambling now.

Bae Doona really WAS adorable though. I'd... I'd almost say I'd sit through it again just for her. >>

Gozu

One of Miike's films. This really kind of made me think. A lot of unexpected parts in this one. It's got that twisted horror black-comedy in it, so yeah. It's really good though , don't get me wrong. Its just really different, in a different way..if that makes sense. I know for sure is that I don't think I can drink milk for a good while.

Gamera: GOTU

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's my rainy day/ feeling sick film; my favorite of Kaneko's trilogy and tied with Guiron for my favorite Gamera film.

Nearly flawless. I know I've nit picked the special effects in the past, but this time they didn't bother me at all.

Mimic: The Director's Cut

Still not a perfect movie, but this cut allowed GDT to restore at least one important plot point and to take out all the jump scares filmed by second unit directors. It's a more than serviceable creature film that's well directed and beautifully composed visually (it's the first GDT film that looks like a GDT film).

What does get 4 stars is the commentary. Now, most of GDT's director's commentaries are like sitting in at the greatest class ever, but this one takes a turn in that in revisiting one of his toughest professional experiences GDT lets himself be more vulnerable then usual, almost becoming a heart-to-heart talk with the viewer.

Speed Racer

Got the Blu-Ray, and it's quite possibly the best Blu-Ray in terms of picture quality I've ever seen. When this came out a lot of people hated the film's look, but I think it's amazing. Guillermo Del Toro says there is "eye candy" and "eye protein" and this is the later: the film's look is just as much a character in the story as the actors (who are also great). It's a refreshingly sweet and sincere movie that never seems concerned with pandering to the lowest common denominator and spelling everything out for the audience. This is a film that constructs a complete fantasy world and then just plunges us into it and expects us to figure it out as we go along.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring EE (BD)- This movie looks simple fantastic on BD and I think they removed the green tint too as I didn't notice it. The sound is fantastic as well. Final note the film holds up great after 11 years.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers EE (BD)- Like the previous film it looks and sounds fantastic on Blu-ray. The Gollum/Smeagal effects hold up really well to other CGI creatures not so much.

The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King EE (BD)- Again looks and sounds fantastic. I used to find this my favorite of the trilogy but it kind of drags on and on especially the ending or should I say endings.

The Relic- I hadn't seen this in awhile and decided to record it on HBO HD and it's an okay creature film. Kothogua looks great probably because Stan Winston designed him. Plot could have been better but overall okay film.

THIRST

This Korean Priest-Turns-Vampire/Love-Hate Story was pretty good. Like OLDBOY, it will leave you feeling... uh... confused about how you feel about it? But there is no question that what you just watched was an engaging and unique story.
