Suicide Club

I enjoyed this film. It had lots of blood, drama, and a few comic moments. The connection between all the suicides and the J-Pop kids group was a twist. The damn kid on the phone was "perfectly" annoying with him clearing his stupid throat after every sentence.

The film had many plot holes however, and it seems to be that there is a "sequel" to the film that sort of digs in those plot holes, so I will be on a lookout for it. On an end note, Sion Sonno seemed to shoot for that "cult" film style, and I believe he accomplished it. It's definitely worth a watch. I'm just hoping that Hollywood isn't planning a remake.

Overall Grade: B+

Rebirth of Mothra

It wasn't like I remembered and it definitely isn't Rebirth of Mothra III

Black Death

Didn't expect this film to be good at all...hadn't heard anything about it really but wow, this was like an old school Hammer film. Reminded me of the original The Wicker Man. Loved it.

Now that I've seen Love Exposure, I wouldn't be against seeing Suicide Club.

By the way, Mouth, Love Exposure got an R1 release last month. Trouble is, they squeezed the entire four hour film onto a single DVD, resulting in mediocre video, there are no extras, the subtitles are hardcoded, and there are only twelve chapter stops for the entire thing. Seriously.

The one positive thing is that the cover was kind of swanky:

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Finally got to see this today. Watched it instead of doing homework lol.

My thoughts:

Pretty good film. It's a shame an original...well...remake of something so obscure that it SEEMS original, horror film did so poorly at the box office but what else is new.

I do think they showed the monsters too early in the film, but I think the monsters' designs and personalities were excellent. I don't think GDT is capable of poorly designing a monster.

The acting was all top notch, with a big kudos to Katie Holmes. This is the first film I've seen her in, in ages, that I actually liked her character and thought she did more than just a medicore job in. It's a shame that she's been typecast as Tom Cruise's wife and doesn't get meatier roles like this one more often.

As far as GDT produced film...I think this was a more coherent, even film than something like Splice, but Splice had more intersting ideas going for it, and some slightly more interesting characters. I think Don't Be Afaid of the Dark is a better film in a lot of ways because Splice's third act is just a mess, but I think I'd rather watch Splice again all things considered.

I did enjoy watching this film and I recommend horror fans check it out at least once. Doesn't reinvent the wheel but it's a pretty solid fantasy/ horror flick.

I don't understand how someone doesn't have any thing negative to say about Splice's final act. Devin apparently thinks it's one of the top 10 films of the decade

Spoilers:

Dren is a well developed character throughout the film. In the final act she changes into a male, and becomes totally different. A character is turned an it, a creature. That can be something fasinating ala a good werewolf tale but here a character that the audience comes to like in an odd way, is taken away and replaced by something that it's hard to feel anything for but disdain. Writing this, I see what they were probably going for. Maybe reminding the viewer that Dren was always a "thing" but it just doesn't work on film. Not for me anyways. I HATE the male Dren plot. The film is perfect until that point.

Anyways, watched

Creep

Didn't like it as much as Black Death, fasinating though. Might just be the mood I'm in right now but I couldn't stay focused on this film tonight.

Still, I'll admit....this is a director I want to watch for in the future

I rewatched Rise the other night, and it still shocks me how good this thing was. I can't wait to see what they can do for a sequel.

Tokyo Gore Police (2008)

God, what a frigged up movie. The amount of blood and dismembered whatever's in this movie makes Rob Zombie look like a pansy. This stuff really isn't my type of movie, but I was in one of those "oh, what the hell" moods today, so I picked it up at the local B&N. I wasn't exactly prepared for it. I didn't puke or anything, but geez. A guy gets his dick munched off by a stripper with bug-eyes, sliced-open-and-stitched-back-together breasts, and a snail shell on her back. Not a joke. Just a small example of how effed up this movie is. As for the actual quality, I wasn't terribly impressed; no real character development outside of the main character, which didn't have much anyway. But it seemed like the main purpose of the movie was to be disgusting, and it pulls it off very well. If you like sex, multiple forms of dismemberment, and deformed people (a chick with an alligator mouth for legs, a guy with the top missing from his head), this might be worth a look. But if you have a weak stomach, go watch Freddy vs. Jason or something. It's a little less bloody. :)
