Close Encounters of the Third Kind - I'm actually going to see Devil's Tower in a couple of days on a quick vacation, so I HAD to watch this again in preparation...

Watched the 1980 (?) Special Edition version on the bluray as it's the only version I hadn't seen yet. While I enjoy the theatrical & final director cuts about equally, this version is VASTLY inferior. And it's inferior for two major reasons. First, showing the interior of the ship really hurts the "awe & wonder" aspect of the finale. I mean REALLY hurts it. Secondly, this version cuts out a MAJOR scene. You know the sequence where Dreyfuss just goes totally nuts & starts shoveling dirt in through the kitchen window? TOTALLY CUT OUT. Which makes the following scene of his wife leaving while the neighbors look on in stupor make much less sense. And it leaves the giant dirt Devil's Tower model in the middle of his living room as a mere background element that's never explained or expanded on.

I don't think I'll ever watch this version again. I'll continue watching the original cut b/c it's the original. & I'll alternate between it & the final director's cut b/c the DC is probably what I consider the "best" version. But that 1980 SE cut just sucks.

Did a Star Wars marathon with the gf today. She'd never seen any of them before! A Star Wars virgin!! We started with the original trilogy first and skipped Ep 1 and 2 lol.

What I found fasinating was how much of an impact Ep. 3 had on my gf. It was like seeing the film for the first time for me as I watched it through her eyes. She couldn't look away in the last half of the movie!!!

I've always wanted to see somebody's first reaction to Star Wars. Prequels and all, just to see how that goes. My gf, though not a Star Wars virgin, was introduced to them via the prequels and saw the Original Trilogy after Episode 3. That process was long over by the time we met, though.

I watched A New Hope with the wife for her first time fairly recently...I'm usually not a huge huge fan of the first film because it is a little cheap looking compared to Empire/Jedi and a litle less exciting. Watching it with someone where it's their first time and kinda explaining things along the way and pointing stuff out, and really REALLY watching it and not just sorta having it on or kinda watchin it at the end of a day...it was exciting and fun and like watching it for the first time.

She wasn't a huge fan of it, but she also hasn't refused to watch Empire in the near future and I'm hoping that the movie being better in just about every way will really have an effect on her and she'll enjoy it.
