Ultraman Zero Gaiden - Killer the Beatstar

Postby Godzilla 2000 » Wed Nov 30, 2011 3:49 am

Ok, so technically this doesnt have its own topic, so why not.

In case you dont know, Stage 1 is out. I've watched it and...

It sucks. Like, really, really, sucks.

Lemme try and explain.

WANRING! SPOILERS ALLOWED IN THIS THREAD!

The movie begins pretty abruptly. Zero and crew are just cruising through space, and suddenly, this planet sized...thing pops up and starts attacking them...for some reason (literally, the screen goes black, then cuts to the planet thing, and then cuts to Zero and Co. flying alongside it).

And Jumbot gets captured because he got separated from them, but was somehow nearby...for some reason, all while the camera focuses on the Princess nervously breathing and looking from side to side...yeah, ok. Then they attack it, and it vanishes...

So cut to the Zap Spacy crew (or just Rei and Hyuuga, cuz apparently they're the only ones on the crew who matter anymore), going to someplace or other, I dunno. Thing had no subtitles, so they could be getting takeout for all I know. But they spot the mysterious planet thing and investigate it.

They get attacked by a Legionoid...for some reason. I guess it was leftover from Belials army? But how can it be here if these were originally from another universe? Ah who cares. So Rei has Gomora fight, and its boring as crap. A few lazy hits (set to a god damn saxophone...for some reason) and its time for the Oscillatory Nose Stab thing. How Gomora's bone horn can pierce a metal robot is beyond me, but he does it anyway.

Then King Joe, Imperalizer, and Ace Killer (sans his battle sai) appear to fight Gomora...for some reason. This fight also sucks, not just because there's no music, and the movement is slow, but the fight choreography is just terrible. Not to mention the incredibly boring and unimaginative camera work. There are A LOT of wide shots of the characters just...hitting and grappling. The same applies when Zero and crew magically arrive on the scene. No clever cuts, no closeups, and no real sense of "3 battles going on at once." Zero first appears in his Ultimate Form, but then regresses to his base form. WHY? Also, once again, the 3 battles are set to.....silence. Glenfire vs Ace Killer was the only highlight of this thing, and even then, it ends in an incredibly stupid way; Ace Killer, after getting lightly piledrived by Glenfire, stands up for a few seconds, starts glowing, and explodes. I'm not kidding. That is exactly what happens.

So eventually Jumkiller/Jumnine/the f***king robot guy shows up and somehow dominates Zero. What happened to Zero? He used to be incredibly powerful. Now he's just...not. Now would be a great time to use that Ultimate Form, wouldnt it? Oh well. Jumbot eventually shows up, under some kind of control, and lazily tries to attack the human characters...like anyone cares by this point.

It ends with Ultraman, Zoffy, and Ultraseven flying through space...for some reason. I'm assuming they're heading towards the giant planet thing, which is now heading towards Earth.

I dont know how how else to explain my feelings on this sidestory, other than that it feels like it was made by an entirely different crew. I was so disappointed by the time the preview rolled. I still am. This...sucks. It makes the Darclops Zero gaiden look like a masterpiece.

Still pretty slow-paced but I enjoyed Stage II about as much as the previous Stage. A worthy entry into the Ultra series, I think.
