I'm not saying these are guys where you have to enjoy their entire filmographies. Sam Raimi, Joe Dante, George Romero, John Carpenter, etc. have made quite a few films I don't care much for, but they're all in my top 20. I'm talking about whose actual directing do you like the most? You don't have to like everything to like a director.

Hm. Here's a top eight right off the top of my head.

1. Ishiro Honda
2. Wong Kar-Wai
3. Jun Fukuda
4. Takeshi Yagi
5. Jean-Pierre Jeunet
6. Akio Jissoji
7. Keita Amemiya
8. Shusuke Kaneko

It's hard for me to go further than that simply because my tastes are kind of ADD and all over the place. It's easier for me to do favorite movie lists than favorite directors.

Also, I am a little sad but maybe also a little proud that I'm the first to mention Jeunet or WKW. XD

Style. Their styles are awesome - they generally involve really creative camerawork and unique lighting. Look at Ultraman Max for good examples. For Yagi, check out episode 25, 26 and 27, and for Akio Jissoji look at episodes 22 and 24.

Man, the middle of Ultraman Max especially is just so good.

My favorite WKW films are Chungking Express () and Fallen Angels (; they're sort of companion pieces). Check them out if you get a chance. Mind you, they're very slice of life and open-ended so you may choose to avoid them if you don't jive with that. I would say he shares a lot stylistically with Jissoji, actually.
