My friends and I had our second annual endurance test/Star Wars marathon that we do on Black Friday (lovingly dubbed "Blue Harvest Fest") this past Friday. This year, in addition to the six films, we added the Holiday Special... ugh.

In case anyone was wondering, if you watch all six Star Wars movies and the Holiday Special starting at 9am, you will finish shortly after midnight. Your brain will stop functioning normally about halfway through Episode III. By the time we got to the final act of Episode VI, we were engaged in a philosophical discussion about whether we would eat the flesh of Steven Spielberg. It was that kind of day.

Tokyo Sonata

An absolutely devastating film...most of the film is bleak, pitch black in how depressing it is...but the end turns a little and it becomes bitter sweet....a very deep, emotional reflection on modern life

Hanna - I expected it to be like a Jason Bourne movie only with a teenage girl. Boy was I surprised! I mean, it pretty much is that, but there's so much more! The editing, sound, production design... It's so off kilter and disorienting and fantastic. It was kinda like teenage girl Bourne meets The Royal Tenenbaums or something. Definately worth a watch if you like artsy films that are a bit startling with the audio/visual editing.

Jurassic Park - Got the bluray set a few weeks ago. Man this film is fantastic. The last time I watched it was on laserdisc, so this was a real treat. It holds up SO well and the cgi still blows the pants off a LOT of stuff that came much later (I'm looking at you star wars prequels). And don't even get me started on the awesomeness that is Stan Winston! That man made dinosaurs live again. So much fun I actually just re-read the book for the first time in over 15 years.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park - Not as good as the first by a long shot, but still a fun sequel that is, overall, enjoyable. And the ending is just a blast... (especially for Godzilla fans!).

Jurassic Park 3 - This one's pretty much terrible. But the dinosaurs are still cool... well... except for that one talking raptor in the plane.... Even my wife burst out laughing at that & she finds these movies pretty terrifying (something about large animals with giant teeth & claws coming to eat you freaks her out).

The Muppets - Really enjoyed it. A nice throwback to the classic Muppet style with plenty of nods to the great fan-favorite moments.

I've seen the prequels and all non-original trilogy stuff so infrequently, that they really don't bother me at all...they just exist and suck and I ignore them.

The Ex-Mrs. Bradford

I'm a huge fan of the Thin Man series of films starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. Well, this is sort of riff (okay, rip-off) from another studio. They got Powell on loan for MGM and substituted Jean Arthur for Loy. Same formula: Powell and wife (or in this case ex-wife, though they clearly still love each other) trade verbal jabs all the while really caring about each other + murder mystery + cast of suspicious characters.

Not as good as The Thin Man films (at least the first two), but a quality substitute.

Take Me Home Tonight- This was recently added to Netflix instant stream so I decided to watch it. It was decent.

Jurassic Park- Finally got around to popping the first film in on BD and it looks great, some stuff shows it's age but for the most part the film looks amazing. Audio was excellent to I watched it with my Turtle Beach PX5 Headphones that do 7.1 and I heard stuff I've never heard before and saw stuff I've never seen before.

Iron Cross (1977): Snooze...not a big Peckinpah fan.

Gambit (1966): Delightfully Surprising...a really great film.

Going to watch Gamera: The Brave next...

Double Harness

Rather dull '30s melodrama I watched because it stars William Powell. Not terribly bad, neither is it terribly good. He's the best thing about the movie, even if his character is a douche bag.
