Godzilla Legends #1 Reaction Thread

Postby ebirahsmeg1 » Tue Nov 15, 2011 5:20 am

Post your thoughts/comics here about the first issue of Godzilla Legends #1.

Here is an early review (though the reviewer is not very well informed about Godzilla's history):

[quote]As a Godzilla fan, I’ve had a mixed reaction to IDW’s two previous comics series, Kingdom of Monsters and Gangsters and Goliaths, both of which had their strengths and weaknesses, each one was done in by inconsistent and often uninspired artwork. IDW’s new series, Godzilla Legends takes a unique approach in that it offers a series of one-shots that focus on different monsters from Toho’s stable.

The first issue focuses on Anguirus and Desotroyah, as the two clash in Tokyo. This pairing shows off one of the strengths of the concept and of the IDW license in general, which finally allows comics access to the whole pantheon of Toho monsters. For those not familiar with the Godzilla series, Anguirus was Godzilla’s first monster opponent from Godzilla Raids Again in 1956. The other monster was featured in Godzilla vs. Desotoroyah thirty years
later and is notable for being one of the most powerful and evil of Godzilla’s adversaries and even succeeded in “killingâ€

Just read it last night and gonna pick it up this evening. Solid issue, and the art is awesome. The monsters look fantastic. Good job Matt!

The human side of the story feels basic but it's the monster stuff, again, that shines. Finally, an Anguirus-centric story, and it's great. Really nailed him.

My local comic shop has one wall for all of the new releases in alphabetical order. I went there earlier today and Godzilla: Legends #1 was sold out, the only blank spot on the wall.

I posted a rather large comment on Legends #1 yesterday, but it seems to have...vanished? Been deleted? I dunno. I'm puzzled, because I saw the post and reread it after posting. I don't know why it isn't here anymore (and I'm a little annoyed that it's gone now).

Anyway: I LOVED this comic. Easily the best fight in any of IDW's Godzilla comics so far by a pretty big margin, blowing away anything from either KOM or even G&G. Unlike the Godzilla v. King Ghidorah fight in KOM #8, Destroyah v. Anguirus is well choreographed, allows each character to shine for a bit, and takes its time - as a result, the experience is much fuller and more fleshed out.

The human side, though pretty simple and bare, was still interesting (though Dr. Anders was annoying).

Overall, I decided to give this one my first 5 out of 5 (A+). I really can't wait to see more of this mini-series! :D
