Is anyone going to comment on
"The Secret of My Excess"?
Its too early for me to really call this one of my favorite episodes of the series, but it had two of my favorite elements from the show; giant monsters on the loose, and Spike / Rarity relationship development.
Spike's very existence as a baby dragon has never been brought up before, especially when one considers the two adult dragons from past episodes that were rather dire threats. Of course being
"My Little Pony", it probably would never be brought up because IT IS such a pleasant world and inhabiting characters, who would never think twice about their friend Spike's species background. And even after Spike's rampage, everyone is still okay with their beloved baby dragon has returned to them.
With that said however, there is that one brief, rather bittersweet scene, where Spike himself compares his tiny hand to the gigantic footprint he himself left behind only minutes before. Guess it dawns on poor Spike that despite this freakish occurrence, being a greedy giant is ultimately his fate as an adult dragon.
It is sad that this will become Spike's fate, BUT it's also always fun to see a regular sized character going temporally daikaiju on us, like Bender on
"Futurama" or Batman on
"Superfirends" and
"Brave and the Bold". And of course, I loved the fact that Ponyville has a Toho-style evacuation alarm (probably set up after the Ursa Minor attack), and the subtle shout out to "King Kong", when giant Spike abducts Rarity from her bedroom window.
Okay, now onto the big shocker of the episode; Rarity knows about Spike's crush on her?!?!
That moment alone, where the now normal Spike and Rarity are virtually falling to their deaths (before Flutter Shy and Rainbow Dash saves them of course), and the baby dragon reveals his feelings to her, only to be lovingly hush quiet by Rarity, had my jaw hanging open. Please someone through me a second opinion on this tidbit!
Anyway...as you can all see, the damn show has absorbed me into its insidious collective...I should be happy, right?
