Trigun: Badlands Rumble

It's been 13 years since the Trigun anime series first aired, and about 9 years or so since I first watched it on it's US premier on adult swim, but the series' enormous popularity (mainly here in the states) has awarded this sort of reunion movie.

Set sometime during the first half of the series, this movie's basically a feature length version of one of those earlier, more lighthearted and adventuresome episodes. As such, it lacks the dramatic punch that the show had (mainly, the dramatic left-turn the series took halfway through), and I don't think it really conveys the motivations and likability of the core cast enough to serve as an introduction for new fans (Millie and Meryl get very little to do, as a matter of fact)... but that's not really the point: this movie is a splashy new adventure for old fans of the series, and on that token the movie is a success. Basically, it's a big "lost episode" with lots of the winning combination of comedy, science fiction, and western that the series does so well.

Which reminds me, I really need to read the comic one of these days!

The Deadly Mantis - I hadn't watched this one since I was a kid. I really enjoyed it and enjoyed that they showed the mantis a lot. I don't recall that as a kid. I wish it had some more scenes of it eating more humans, but oh well, still a great 50's giant bug movie.

Sledgehammer - An 80's slasher, one of the first to be shot on video (or so the box said). It was pretty meh. The first murder was good, where a cheating bimbo locks her kid in a closet while she goes to get frisky with her lover. While she's going down on him, someone walks up behind him, smashes his head in with a sledgehammer, than hammers her to death. After that it was all bad 80's hair, acting, and a long time to get to the rest of the murders, which were just so-so.

Fraternity Massacre At Hell Island - A horror comedy about a college fraternity that gets terrorized by a killer clown while they're doing their hell night initiation on new pledges. 2 of the dudes are secretly gay and in a relationship with each other, the pledge leader's girlfriend is pissed that he spends too much time invested in his fraternity and sets about to put an end to it, the dean gets blackmailed when he tries to stop the fraternity from having their hell night, but he plans on putting a stop to it anyway, a former pledge who went crazy at a past hell night escapes from the mental ward and the warden goes looking for him, and finally, a group of dead performers are stuck on the island, the result of a curse that a gypsy woman put on them for insulting her, and must find a way to fool 4 strangers into performing their entire song and dance routine so that they can be free from the curse. Despite all those multiple stories, the film was just meh. The murders could've been bloodier, though the clown was pretty funny, dancing happily throughout the movie. A little more blood and gore and this could've been a more enjoyable movie.

The Thirsty Dead - 70's schlock about some women who get kidnapped by a cult who take them to some secluded place in the jungle. There, a group of people who worship a decapitated head in a box are planning on making one of the women their new queen. They drink on blood to keep themselves youthful and have been alive for years. This film is mildly entertaining, but could've used more sleaze. You'd think that a film with a bunch of bimbos in it made in the 70's would've upped the sleaze factor, but it was pretty tame.

I'm also planning to watch a film currently at my local movie theatre called The Dead later this week, about zombies in Africa. Sounds promising.

Frankenstein Conquers the World- I watched the international print. Still a pretty good film and Baragon is a great monster it's a shame he had to go up against Frankenstein rather than something like Godzilla. Oh well the movie was good, acting good and the musical score was great. Sadly I feel victim to late night sub syndrome and almost fell asleep watching the movie.

Call of cthulhu- The 2000 indy throwback film to silent movies. It was alright wish they wouldh ave shown more of Cthulhu but oh well.

The Wolf Man (41)- This is my all time favorite werewolf flick. My only complaint is that it could have been a little longer but still pretty much flawless.

Werewolf of London- Universal's first attempt at a werewolf film and it's pretty good sure it doesn't set up some of the werewolf mythos that later werewolf flicks would but still great werewolf flick non the less. The werewolf design is good and the plot is decent but still not as great as The Wolf Man.

Frogs - all the heavy-handed environmentalism of Prophecy, but 1/3 the fun.

Abominable Dr. Phibes - I wanted to like this movie MORE, but I couldn't get past the flimsy use of the ten plagues of Egypt. While I COULD get past locusts being herbivores, bee stings being used to represent boils (actually, this one is pretty ingenious), and the out of order sequence of the plagues, I could not get past the fact that there IS no plague of bats or of rats, and the brass unicorn head launched from a catapult is a pretty weak interpretation on the plague against livestock. It's a weird, wild, campy movie and it's good for some fun, but it kinda pissed me off at the same time.

Ravenous - awesome. starts off a little weak but gets really good really fast

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil - holy CRAP. this is one of the funniest movies i've seen in a LONG time. For anyone that hasn't seen it, it's like "imagine if everything in a horror movie was just a misunderstanding"
