The Muppet Christmas Carol

This largely works because, despite splashes of Muppet comedy throughout, it sticks fairly close to Dickens' story, and it's of course a very strong story (though this film has the disadvantage of that story already being done more superbly on film a few times before). Paul Williams' songs for this aren't up to the standards of the ones in The Muppet Movie, but the Marley and Marley number is a knockout.

EDIT: Wow! I watched the widescreen/theatrical version, which had a very important scene edited out by Disney. If I had watched the fullscreen/VHS edit also on the DVD I would have seen this scene because Brian Henson restored it for home video. It's basically a breakup song sung by Belle to young Scrooge. This helps establish Scrooge's emotional arc much better whereas in the theatrical cut it feels much more choppy and less satisfying. Just goes to show what one scene can do!

Creature - Horror film about a group of young folks who go into the Louisiana bayou and encounter the legend of a monster called LockJaw. It starred Sid Haig (House Of A Thousand Corpes, Devils' Rejects). It was nothing spectacular and filled with the usual clichés (crazed incestuous backwoods family, crazed cult members performing a sacrifice for their religion, etc, etc.), but for the most part it was entertaining and I liked that the monster was a man-in-suit instead of CGI. I wish the killings had been a bit more bloody and they had shown more of the monster's attacks, but all in all not too bad. I've seen worse.

Vanishing On 7th Street - Creepy, eerie flick about whispering shadows (black matter?) that's taking people while a small group of survivors struggle to keep the enclosing darkness at bay. I found this film to be mostly effective and well-made horror.

Apollo 18 - The reality/documentary style applied to a space movie. I wasn't expecting much but it wasn't as bad as I had expected. Astronauts land on the moon and discover these spider-like creatures that attack them. The creatures are not shown too clearly but some of their scenes are effective. The human characters aren't developed too well and the editing and pacing, especially at the beginning, is kinda of choppy and fragmented, so there's not much reason to care for them. And this whole "found footage" angle is simply lame. It wouldn't work even if this was the 1st film of it's kind, because the way it's shot so obviously reveals it's a production and not reality. People will either find this flick boring or they'll get a kick out of the monsters, like I did. I wonder what horror subgenre will get the found footage treatment next? The slasher flick? The killer kid flick? The vampire flick? The torture-porn flick? Hmmmm.....

Mister Roberts

Great comedy/drama film from the '50s set during WWII. Probably most notable because of the caliber of actors that make up the cast: Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon, James Cagney, and (in his last film) William Powell

... but that's not all, Godzilla fans! Our own Nick Adams is in this flick. It's set aboard a Navy vessel, and he's one of the crew. Has about a dozen lines and is in the background quite often.

Muppet Treasure Island

Christmas Carol was probably a better film... but this one has three killer musical numbers and Kermit sword fighting (and is more of a romp overall), so I think I enjoyed it more.

Watched the Lion King today in 3-D.
It's still pretty great. The 3-D was fine, enough to legitimize the experience I guess, but it wasn't annoying.

Drive- I really can't recommend this movie enough. Ryan Gosling, Ron Perlman, Bryan Cranston and Albert Brooks all give some of the best performances of their careers. Its the kind of gritty, violent drama that doesn't come around much these days (unless a name like Scorsese or Cronenberg is attached). SEE THIS! One of the best films of the year by far!

The Red Shoes

Third film I've watched of his and now I can safely say that Michael Powell is one of my favorite directors.

I find myself attracted to films that play with the medium of film, realizing that the whole film experience can be more like a dream with dream logic - like in this film when the ballet sequence starts and gradually becomes a more and more elaborate fantasy sequence as we enter the mind of the ballerina.

Drive, huh? My brother told me it was really good. Might just go check it out one of these days then.

Anyways, last movie I've seen was Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, haha. I've been playing an old Star Wars game, and couldn't help but wanna watch the movies again. Gonna start Empire sometime this weekend.

Muppets From Space

Definitely the worst muppet film I've seen, but there's still a few bright spots: anything at the house where all the muppets live in this movie is pretty golden (who wouldn't want to hang out there?). There are some truly abysmal C-list celebrity cameos... but there's also Jeffrey Tambor, Pat Hingle, and Ray Liotta, so that evens out.
