Glad you liked the movie, Ben!

Regarding your second spoiler...

The Mach 6 is actually featured in the very first race at the beginning of the film. The idea was that the Mach 5 was used for street driving and road races, while the Mach 6 was a T-180 (the front axel can rotate) designed for the high-tech World Racing League racetracks.

Also, in the flashback where Rex lets Speed drive, the car they're in is apparently the Mach 4.

When I first saw the Mach 6 design I was unimpressed, but I later thought it worked in the context of the film. Plus I was happy that the Mach 5 was the main car and got the most screen time.

Hmmmm...

That makes sense regarding the different kinds of cars being used for different races. I didn't mind the differing designs, especially since the classic Mach 5 is what we see the most (and I'm still overjoyed that they kept its design completely identical to that of the cartoon; take note, Michael Bay). I just wish they would have kept a #5 on the side of the car across all of the different incarnations. That one little detail would have made a world of difference in my book.

I actually got to the theater about ten minutes late. I got there as Spritle was saying "Do you think he's gonna do it!?" in reference to Speed possibly beating Rex's record time on that track. I watched the first seven minutes on SciFi Japan when I got back (talk about convenient happenings), so I've really only missed a minute or two of the film. After watching that I was kind of confused as to why Speed was driving the Mach 6 at the beginning of the movie, but your explanation makes sense and I do think it works within the film. Just agh... give it a #5 and all would be right in the world!

^Finally watched it (because of this thread, actually) and I though it was great. I think all the haters just had no idea of what a movie version of Speed Racer entailed: over-the-top cartoonishness, straight-arrow, "awe shucks!" goody two-shoes heroes; campy supervillian bad guys; and some mysterious Racer X shenanigans.

This film succeeded in everything it wanted to do.

^I might have to get the Blu Ray. I thought this was really fantastic fun.

Makes me want to watch the original series!

PS- Holy spit! Wiki says that big vehicle those gangsters were driving was the mammoth car. How did I miss that?!

Probably because it wasn't nearly as big in this movie. I didn't make the connection until later either.

I definitely plan on getting the bluray for this eventually too.
