So I picked up some DVDs for Return of Ultraman and Ultraman Ace at G-Fest that were dubbed. I was especially excited because the RoU disc had the first two episodes, which were directed by Ishiro Honda (and I'm kind of a completist of his work, so this was really exciting to find).
So I put them in and the dialogue is in this bizarre broken English and half the time I don't know what anybody is saying. It sounded as if the actors learned their lines phonetically. This was both disappointing and hilarious at the same time... althought it was still awesome seeing Honda's episodes with some kind of translation.
Then I hop online and find out that a few of the Showa Ultra-series were dubbed in Malaysia, which is why these are like that. Now my question is why/how did this happen? Why have foreign people who can barely speak English dub a show into English. Were Tsuburaya trying to cut costs and hire the cheapest voice actors they could?
The whole thing is pretty baffling to me.
