Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) - What a blast from the past! I remember my parents wouldn't let me see it in theaters b/c I was too young. But then they bought it for me when it came out on tape. I nearly wore that thing out as for weeks every day when I got home from school I'd start it from where I left off the day prior. When I got to the end, I'd rewind it and start it over immediately. I probably watched it two or three times in a row somedays. The turtle suits still hold up quite well and are a true testament to he skills of the Jim Henson Creature Shop. Cowabunga!

The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - watched the hidef theatrical reconstruction (called the "Despecialized Edition") by Harmy from originaltrilogy.com. Totally blown away. It was like seeing it for the first time! He changed back everything from the special edition. And it's freaking in hd!!! It looked so good I could cry. I never thought I'd see the theatrical cuts in such good quality (he's also done Star Wars '77 and is currently finishing up Jedi). Harmy and the people who've collaborated with him to make these have saved Star Wars from the horrible destruction at the hands of their original creator.

Gunhed

I wish I liked this film more but it kind of sucks. The design of Gunhed is awesome, and the used world sets of the film are pretty great too. The plot doesn't make any sense though, and the editing is atrocious, (GxMGxM SOS levels of bad)...things just happen in this film and they happen quickly, often leaving me scratching my head and asking, WTF?

I've seen this film once before, I honestly couldn't finish it this second time...it's impossible to follow, the characters are boring as is the rest of the film oddly enough..

Winnie the Pooh

Wonderful little film, beautifully (traditionally) animated. It's about nothing in particular: Pooh has run out of honey, Eeyore's lost his tale, and the whole gang whip themselves into a frenzy when they misunderstand a note left by Christopher Robin. Everything turns out okay in the end. Not as good as the original The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, but that film was like a big collection of short stories (being as it was a compilation of short films) whereas this one is just one little story - but it's a jewel.

I recently watched Woody Allen's Midnight In Paris, where Owen Wilson finds himself going back in time at midnight to hang out with some of his literary idols of the 1920's like T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway. I found it enjoyable and Owen Wilson didn't get on my nerves like he usually does in other movies.

I also watched the Korean thriller I Saw The Devil about a police detective to exacts revenge on the serial killer who murdered his wife. It was gory, filled with some unexpected turns and I would place it up there with Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy.

A Takashi Miike double feature of Auditon andVisitor Q.

Psycho chicks, dismemberment, incest, prostitution, mother abuse, necrophilia, and lactating -- it really helped ease the pain of missing G-FEST.

The Rite

This movie was interesting. I wouldn't consider it horror at all though. It was more of a supernatural thriller or something of that sort. I enjoyed Hopkins' acting and the comedy that he added was just as good as well. I can't imagine this movie without him at all. However, like anyone else will say, this is not his best movie.

The Adventures of Robin Hood

Got the Blu-Ray, it looks phenomenal and it's dirt cheap (a lot of extras, too!). Anyhow, no other movie makes armed rebellion look this fun. I can see a lot of influence on Star Wars with this: some of Robin's manners are mirrored in Han Solo's in Star Wars and Empire, and the scene where the merry men save Robin from being hanged is directly referenced in the scene where Luke is to be fed to the Sarlac in Return of the Jedi.

Steamboat Bill, Jr.

Last year I got the big Buster Keaton boxed set and became a fan. I recently traded that set back in because Kino International is re-releasing all of that material in far-superior, new Blu-Ray editions! I used the store credit to buy a few of the discs released so far, first up: Steamboat Bill, Jr!

This film disappointed me last year because it's Keaton's best known film besides The General and I don't think it measured up to that film or a few others (Sherlock Jr., The Navigator, and Our Hospitality - to mention a few), but now I see I was just being thick: Steamboat Bill, Jr. is an awesome movie. Buster is an effete college boy who goes to visit his father, a tough riverboat captain, who hasn't seen him since he was a kid. At first Buster is an embarrassment to his dad, but in the climactic, stunt-filled finale (set during a hurricane - that famous shot of a house falling on Buster is from here) he proves his mettle.

Thor

I liked it overall - but I can't help but think it would've been a better film if there were a few more relaxed moments where we get to know the characters and flesh out the world. As it was, it alternates between fantasy action with a bit of respite for fish-out-of-water comedy. The reason I'd have liked this extra time was because so many of the characters seemed very interesting and as it was I feel we only got to know Loki and Thor.
