I don't get the Belial hate...what's not to like? The dude is one evil mo fo and actually presents a foil for Ultraman that's a little closer to home then the space ninja Baltan. They can actually have a banter back and forth ya know.

For a trilogy of films and for the general direction of the series I'm glad they went this route as it gives the series a few new things to chew on for a bit while also allowing Ultraman to take a break from TV for a while so hopefully they can save up some great ideas for his eventual return.

That being said I do hope they return to the more "classic" formula after this...I wouldn't mind if Zero went to Earth (though this series takes place in the future so it couldn't be modern day Earth) but with the kind of lack luster ticket sales for these two movies it might be good to just start from scratch.

Which brings me to my last point...um, start from scratch. The Showa era homages and what not are great and all, but I don't think they're really going to attract a whole bunch of fans by repeatedly calling back to the past. Eventually, almost every series needs to start over because it becomes daunting for newcomers to try in break into a a series if they have to know decades worth of back stories and history. So I just hope that after this trilogy is done, they break off from the established continuity and do something new like Max, Nexus or even Tiga (which only has one slight nod to the past towards the end of the series)

Also, one thing that I think has always hurt the series is the weird host/Ultra relationship. I think for the concept to work the best the host needs to also be the Ultra once transformed. It's a minor thing, but something the Kamen Rider series does well....it's weird having to essentially tag the Ultraman into the fight while the human takes a back seat. I've never liked this formula and I know plenty of people on other forums like Henshin Justice that feel the same way although I'll undoubtedly be flamed here for suggesting something from the golden era is kind of "wonky" today...

Anyone else see on Tsuburaya's official YouTube channel? From what I can make out through a quick (Google) translation, it's an interview with the director of a new Ultraman 45th anniversary stage show. From the (awesome looking!) poster, it'll feature a number of returning actors, including Susume Kurobe and Kohji Moritsugu, and looks like an actual proper stage show in a theatre, as opposed to the countless promotional shows performed in malls, etc. Looks awesome! I'm sure this will tie into the new movie, somehow.
