I thought it was okay. I expected a lot worse, but I find that mostly it's just okay. Not TERRIBLE, not AMAZING. My favorite comic book movie this year is still Thor, but Green Lantern was just as fun.

Given my message board name, I can't help but come off as an apologist and I have no desire to debate about this movie. If others didn't like it I'm fine with that. Given that, since I started this thread I guess I better chime in.

This isn't a bad movie. Nor is is a great movie. I think it suffers from thinking it needs to stuff alot more into the first movie than it really needed to. This made the movie drag a bit at times, but not too bad. I wasn't too keen on the self-doubting Hal they were showing in the trailers but now that I've seen the film I can see where they were going with that (I still would have gone another direction).

I hate long posts (I don't read any of yours, I certaintly don't expect anyone to read a long post of mine), so I'll stop before I get into a myriad of other aspects I could comment on. Bottom line, I liked it better than Thor (which I also liked). I think X-Men First Class is a better film, but I enjoyed this one more (again, I am biased).
Let those who worship evil's might, beware my power...

I saw it tonight as well. I went in WANTING SO BAD to like it since I've been saying for YEARS that a good Green Lantern movie would be amazing. I saw all the bad reviews, and while I didn't doubt them, there was that idea in my mind that I would come out saying "Hey it wasn't all that bad." But what I found in this movie was like an exercise in bad writing and sloppy editing. Basically, the whole movie felt like they took a first draft script that was all broad strokes and the bare minimum of every idea they had and turned that into a movie... yet, somehow this thing took 4 writers.

Its not the worst superhero movie I've seen. Its not another Jonah Hex, Elektra, Ghost Rider or Fantastic Four, but its at least as bad as Wolverine and X3.

I'll try not to make this too long, so I'm gonna say a couple random thoughts and be done.

-First things first. OH MY GOD THIS MOVIE HAD THE WORST SCORE EVER. I usually like James Newton Howard, but this sounded like the crap that Keith Emerson would have decided was too bad for Final Wars. I felt like there was a rave in the theater next door and the music was spilling through the walls.

-The acting was NOT top notch, especially Peter Sarsgaard, who had me laughing every time he said something, especially after his transformation. His over the top girly screams that he did every five minutes had me in stitches. The ONLY actor in this who even seemed to be taking anything remotely seriously was Mark Strong. Reynolds got the job done, but he was mostly bland. And Tim Robbins SOOOOOO didn't give a sh*t about this movie. He didn't phone it in, he f*cking e-mailed it in.

-The stuff on Oa was actually pretty decent... too bad they're there for like 10 minutes and the rest is on Earth, which in the context of this movie means its in the most boring place ever.

-The flashback with his dad was laughably awkward and bad. I didn't think anyone would actually do that cliche after Hot Shots basically made it unacceptable, but I guess I was wrong. And if that picture in his cockpit impairs his flying and makes him ALMOST DIE, why is it even there?

-The love triangle was so unnecessary and hackneyed. It doesn't even come up until like half way through the movie that we even realize that Hammond KNOWS Hal and Carol. And even then, the movie pretty much just goes "Oh, these people know eachother." and don't give us anything else to work with.

-The goofy comic relief character was pointless... just about 90% of the characters in this movie.

-More bad writing: So Hal quits the Corps like a baby, and goes to Earth and asks his human friends "gee guys, should I save the world or what?" Why the hell would he ask them? Like they are gonna say no? And if I was in that position, I sure as hell wouldn't ask my Earth friends. I'd ask someone on Oa who knows about the situation... and I felt like Kilowog and Tomar-Re would be his mentors, like his Yoda. Who would guide him through everything. But oh sorry, that would make too much sense in this sh*tpile of a movie. Instead we're just supposed to expect to believe that Blake Lively can have a pep-talk with him and say "hey, you should overcome all your fear." and Hal is all "Ok, sure"- Now if this was a GOOD movie, Hal would have faced an event during this point of the movie that FORCED him to face his own fears... instead we just get his girlfriend telling him to, and that does the trick. Uh huh, ok, movie. This is simple screenwriting rules (SHOW, don't merely TELL), not rocket science.

-The constructs were either lame and uncreative or just plain stupid. A chainsaw? A machine gun? A RACE TRACK? I know just from reading comics where GL is a special guest that he's capable of things much cooler than that.

-The editing is god awful. Every scene starts and ends abruptly, almost like they are starting in the middle of a scene. Its like each scene is only half of a scene.

-Speaking of bad editing, Hal gets trained for like 5 minutes, quits, and comes back and saves the day... and at the end Kilowog says "Do I make a great trainer or what?"- Uhh, you barley trained him, jackass. Did they leave out a whole training segment or something? If you can't show the training, at LEAST give us a montage.

-SPOILERS: The post-credits scene was totally retarded. So we have Sinestro finally making up with Hal... but they are supposed to become great friends, then arch enemies (think Magneto and X's bromance gone stale). The end credits scene has Sinestro putting on the yellow ring to become a villain. WHAT?! So they are just going to skip over THE TWO CHARACTERS' WHOLE FRIENDSHIP AND THE CONCLUSION OF EVERYTHING WE JUST SAW so they can tease us with a sequel? If this movie focused on the friendship, that would make sense... but nothing makes sense here.

Now keep in mind, I know next to nothing about Green Lantern. The only GL stuff I ever read were a couple Alan Moore shorts in anthology books, and even then, its only because they were included in the Alan Moore DC Universe trade. I knew the origin, about the Corps, and about the falling out of him and Sinestro... that's IT! So ideally, I'm the average Joe and should be the prime audience for this movie, and I found it convoluted and sloppy as all get out. On the other end of the coin, I sat next to my buddy, who is the biggest GL fan I've ever met and he was slumping in his seat with his head in his hands the whole time.

Basically, it was OBVIOUS to me that Martin Campbell didn't give a sh*t about the movie he was directing... hell, he's pretty much come forward and SAID as much at this point and it shows. Sometimes (like the Oa sequences), you get the feeling that maybe ONE of the four writers responsible for this garbage might actually understand the story, but every time you get an idea like that, the movie goes back to sh*tsville.

Oh and remember when Fantastic Four turned Galactus into a cloud? They did that to Parallax here.

That's really all my thoughts on this movie. Aside from the look of the Oa scenes, Mark Strong's performance as Sinestro (because he's actually good) and Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond (because he's so incredibly BAD), I didn't get any enjoyment out of this movie. If there's anything I haven't addressed, I'm sure you could just take everything in Kain's friend's review and reverse it and it will be how I feel.

If you have to see this movie, give it a rental. After seeing how well Thor and X-Men: First Class both nailed it this year, Green Lantern is just flat out embarrassing (and anyone who even tries to say its on par with those films is out of their damn mind).

Once again, completely opposite of me.

I do agree about the score, it was bad. They should have gotten Hans Zimmer to score this movie.

And I do agree about his quitting stuff, but come on, it got to the point. As for the love triangle thing, I guess you need to know the comics to understand it. For one thing, Hammond had a newspaper in his apartment that showed Carol's picture, signfying his love for her. Secondly, in the comics, they had gone out briefly before she met Hal. As for the chainsaw, gun, and race track, dude, he just became a GL, he isn't going to have the biggest imangination yet. Give him time.

As for the post credits scene, Sinestro's reasoning was signified during his argument with the guardians when Hal told them to let him take care of it and for them letting Abin Sur die. Again, another thing you would only know by reading the comics. However, just because he put the ring on does not mean he is going to be out right evil in the next movie. They'll most likely play out his betrayal.

And saying it is X3 and Wolverine bad is not true. It is the first time GL has ever been attempted, whereas those were the third and fourth movies, which made them unacceptable. This movie is like Tim Burton's first Batman and Singer's first X-Men. They are not the best movies ever, but they are a step in the right direction, and all it takes is listening to the fans to make it better in the sequel.
