I really recommend you guys read this article. I never knew the origin of this film was so damn fascinating. I'm even more excited now!

I'm seeing this tomorrow night and can't wait!

As far as the Cloverfield esque monster and the apparent luke warm reception of it...I'm of 2 minds on that subject.

On one hand Mouth, I agree...that in this day and age it's hard to make a monster that we haven't seen before.

Yet, I also feel that's a lazy argument and that it's not one that I agree with entirely. Yes, it's hard. Impossible, no.

I think these days people try to put too much into their monsters and they become too complicated. The fact that they aren't very human like anymore, combined with the fact that most monsters have no pathos anymore and seem content just to eat people, mean that today's monsters aren't very endearing to children or even adults. I doubt any kids went into their backyard and pretended to be the Cloverfield monster like children in the past did with Kong, The Gillman, The Wolfman, Godzilla, Frankenstein's Monster ect.

I don't pretend to be a designer or artist. I can't draw a monster to save my life. But I do keep up to date on a lot of fan stuff, and works of modern spfx artists and I can say there's a lot of great monsters being made out there today, for some reason a lot of that stuff seems to not find it's way to the big screen but trust me, we still have some classic monsters ahead of us.

From what I understand, the monster isn't central to the plot really so it's kind of a pointless argument.

One last thing, I do like what I hear about the way the monster is fleshed out as a character, very nuanced...not completely good or bad, a throw back to Kong maybe in the sense that it's both sympathetic, terrifying and a little alien (pardon the bad pun)...it's motives aren't always clear which I like in a monster...we shouldn't always be able to figure out a monster's thought process. For instance, the human reaction might be to go left in a particular situation as going left would seem logical and safe but for some reason the monster goes right.

I dunno, I'm thinking too much again or not enough maybe, who knows...anyways, glad you liked the movie Mouth. I hope I will too

Saw it this evening. I can't say I loved it, but I did enjoy most of it. The monster is cool, the film has a mid-west feel to it (which is should since it's set in Ohio), and I didn't mind the sentimental value.

I'm going to pass on this, at least until it is out on video. I was interested, but after the recent trailers, I just lost all interest on it. If I wanted to watch the Monster Squad, I would watch the Monster Squad, as that is exactly what this movie seems to resemble. I could be wrong, but I'm not willing to spend the money to go to the theater to find out.

have you ever actually SEEN The Monster Squad...

the trailers remind me more of Close Encounters with a scary twist instead of a "everybody loves aliens" twist

I think Lost, Fringe and to a lesser extent, Heroes...all operated under the same veil of total secrecy that J.J seems to like.

Like I said, I think there's a happy medium somewhere...I just think with this particular marketing campaign they went too far in one direction.

I saw this, and I really thought it was probably my favorite film of the year. It was a ton of fun, and while it had that air of familiarity it went to darker places than Spielberg (at least in E.T.) would have tread. The alien design is fine, but it does look like he's the 2nd cousin of the Cloverfield monster. All in all a pretty satisfying moviegoing experience.
