I was being nostalgic and saw the bootleg tape I first watched GMK on many years ago. So I wondered, what happened to the kid which clung to that film so desperately and held it as one of the most amazing things ever? I think it's exactly what I've complained about concerning another film.
Gamera 3 appealed to me because of its nonsensical mysticism, and GMK probably appealed to me in the same way. (I saw the two only two years apart) GMK undoubtedly is a decent G-film, but I think this sort of storytelling has lost its appeal with me. I liked the way Shusuke used it in things like GOTU or G2, where it's either a lot smaller, or spelled out in a better way. My problem is that it's not a subtle sort of mythology, it's clearly more complicated than we're privy to in the film's run time. I mean, yeah I've pieced it together, and it's not like it's brain surgery, but I feel like the film could have benefited with something much simpler. And it will always be the case that the film was tripped out of the gate by the addition of Ghidorah and Mothra.
I'm not sure how coherent or legitimate those claims are, but there they are.
