When Wrestling Was Real by Paul "Butcher" Vachon

Autobiography by the wrestling great. He could've used a proofreader, but I'm a sucker for old wrestling stories. [/i]

I've had to put it aside for a week now b/c of work & some home repairs keeping me busy, but I've been reading Skywalking by Dale Pollock. My mother-in-law sent me a first edition hardback she found on ebay! I've always heard good things about this book from Star Wars fans who have similar opinions as me (incase you don't know, I strongly dislike the Prequels, Special Editions, and the general attitude/opinions of modern George Lucas). Anyway, I can totally see why I've always heard that George wishes this book was never written. It is brutally honest, showing both his genious and his many flaws. It also shows that his core attitude has really never changed. He's just gotten to the point now where he has the ability to surround himself with people who will never challenge or argue with him (something he clearly always wanted). And his work has suffered tremendously for it (sadly, his bank account hasnt. If it had, we might actually be getting the real Star Wars movies on bluray this fall). Anyways, if you're interested in George Lucas's history & a very honest look at what really went on during his early career (the book came out in '83), I highly reccommend tracking a copy down. It's FAR more truthful than anything with the Lucasfilm stamp of approval, especially in the last 15 years or so. I'm about 2/3 through it & can't wait to get back to it next week!

Now reading Witches Abroad by Sir Terry Pratchett (the first book by him that I've read since he got his fancy, new title).

Also dipping into Russian Fairy Tales by Alexander Afanasyev and Popeye Vol. 2: Well Blow Me Down! by E.C. Segar.

Stone Alone by Bill Wyman

After buying Keith Richards' book, I stumbled across this at a used book store. A perfect companion piece.

I just finished

Physics of the Future: How Science will Shape Human Destiny and our Daily Lives by 2100 and it was absoutely brilliant. Dr Kaku gives an excellent and incitiful look into our future. If you're interested in technology then by all means check this out. The best part is Dr. Kaku rarely uses techincally jargon associated with physics so it's not a daunting read if you know nothing about physics (like me). Definetly going to be checking out his other works in the near future.

Starting Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone tonight, I think it's about time I read the books behind the movies.

I must say, I am finding Hard Times by Dickens to be criminally verbose.

Not only within individual sentence structure and paragraphs (which is IMHO forgivable stylistically and actually one of the things I love about HP Lovecraft's work) but in terms of repetition.

He'll write 3-5 paragraphs in a row that amount to the same exact thing, just with more words and phrases to try to hammer the point home.

I feel like he had something to say on Utilitarian society (which I can understand and appreciate) but for some reason, he felt it had to be a NOVEL instead of just a story so that it would get taken 'seriously' and padded it out to length.

I find it boring and bland and I am more and more just browsing through sections rather than taking the time to read the same sentence worded five different ways.

It's this type of book that makes me stray away from "literary fiction" and towards the realm where authors put the STORY above all else.

Finished Robert R. McCammon's SWAN SONG last week, now starting on his SPEAKS THE NIGHTBIRD. SONG was a pretty cool read. Sort of a THE STAND lite. NIGHTBIRD had me hooked with the first half doaen pages. Love McCammon.

Right now I'm reading 2 books:

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. The superb HBO tv series Game of Thrones cause me to pick up the books. Great read so far.

and

1453: The Holy War for Constantinople and the Clash of Islam and the West by Roger Crowley. Finally getting around to this book about a civilization I've been interested in since 9th grade.
