Voyage of the Dawn Treader - I've enjoyed all the Narnia films to date, but this one is far & away my favorite. I just love this movie. It's clearly derivative of other works that came before it, but it's a great "Jason & the Argonauts"/Sinbad style sea-faring adventure that hits all the right notes so you just can't help but like it. The ship itself is really cool looking & the sea serpent is really inspired design! I wanna watch it again already.

One odd thing about the bluray (& I assume the DVD too) is the aspect ratio. The film was released in theaters in a scope 2.40:1 ratio, while the bluray is 1.78:1 (or 16x9). The odd thing is, it's not cropped at the sides but opened up at the top & bottom so you're actually getting more image than less. Apparently the film was shot in 1.78:1 & then cropped vertically to a scope ratio for theatrical release. This is similar to what used to go on with films shot on "Super35" where the 4:3 "pan & scan*" home video versions actually had more picture than the widescreen theatrical versions. page talks about it & has a comparison shot (note that the color of the actual bluray is not faded like the screencap, it looked quite nice)

*they weren't actually pan & scanned, the frame was opened up from the widescreen matting, revealing the full image that was exposed, which was actuall 4:3.

Here's an example of super 35 from T2

Gamera: Gaurdian of the Universe

Not quite the masterpeice it seemed to me at age 12, but still an exciting and quality homage to the '60s Toho flicks. Mill Creek's Blu Ray was a fantastic bargain, but I do wish they had subtitled place names, newspaper headlines, signs, ect.

Harakiri (1962) - A very small (50 seats) arthouse theater screened a 35mm print this weekend. I'd never heard of it, but after hearing they were showing a print of a 60's samurai movie (& watching the trailer on youtube) I knew I had to go! It did not disappoint! The highlight, for me anyway, was the fantastic duel in the wind. Just stunning!

Just watched Salt. It was an ok movie and had some fun action sequences but overall I just couldn't connect with the characters.

Thor

I like it! It was fun, comical, and just visually amazing! I enjoyed seeing Hopkins in another great movie, and can't wait to see Thor return in The Avengers.

Pirates of the Carribean: On Strange Tides

It was new and different. I have no personal complaints, I thought the film was fun and interesting. Zimmer did a magnificent job on the score and even threw in a few guitar compositions, which I thought was both a nice and new touch to the film. All in all, it was great and fun. I can't wait for the next one! :D

Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny

My brains are now splattered on the wall behind me, and I don't own a gun. Makes Santa Claus Conquers the Martians look like It's a Wonderful Life.

And yes, this is the Rifftrax version. I'm not about to watch it without Mike, Kevin & Bill.
