Warning. The following post is picture heavy, but unbelievably cool.

Absolutely amazing day out in Brooklyn today! Stopped by a fellow collector who is selling part of his collection and came home with a very rare Marusan "cream belly" Gorosaurus figure: my first Toho vintage figure in years and one I've wanted for a very long time.

Image

Buuuuuut, that's not all. The seller mentioned he had a box of Ultraman monsters I could go through, all with unattached tags. I was shocked beyond shocked to see that a good 80% of the toys I had been looking for were in this box, everyone from Seagorath and King Crab to Alien Vira and all the Ultraman Great monsters. Unbelievable score.

After passing these up in the 1990s, I finally scored M-Ichigo's much-coveted replicas of the Science Patrol's Shooting Star communicator lapel pins, with extending antennae! These were meticulously recreated from the original props, and represent both styles used in the series (subsequent reproductions from Tsuburaya Shop have only issued one type).

^ August that is really, really neat. Man I wish someday to get something like that myself. :D Now that I think about it, it probably can be said that those Science Patrol communicators were the predecessor idea for the Star Trek The Next Generation communicator uniform pins. They didn't extend any antennae, just did the hand contact over the plate facing to talk with other Star Fleet people in the show.

Here's my recent old skool toy haul: M-Ichigo/Bullmark repro Angilas (2005), Marusan repro Baragon (n/a), and M-Ichigo/Bullmark repro Megalon (2008)! I don't care if they are originals or authorized repros, as long as I like 'em!

Went to the local comic convention today. There's usually one or two booths with Godzilla stuff & this year was no exception. I was never able to get the 6 inch memorial box, so I was really happy to get some pretty decent prices (compared to what some dealers charge) on the '64 & '67. Honestly, if I could get these kind of prices on all the figures I really wanted out of the set, I'd be happy to just get the new sculpts from the set a la carte. I also picked up a (sadly tagless - I do rempove them, but like to keep them in baseball card holders) '75 bandai (I'm pretty sure it wasn't part of the memorial set...?). All told, I talked him down to $65 for all three figures, which I was pretty happy about!

Hey, you're right! I had it confused with the '73/'74 tagged release. Should've checked Clubtokyo before posting...

In these hard economic times, one should save and invest their money wisely....

....and then buy some Godzilla figures with it.

It appears Hell has indeed frozen over....ol’ Ebirahsmeg1 got some X-plus’!

Now, truth be told, I have been a very harsh critic over the extremely high prices of these things combined with some of their quality control issues. To be blunt, I just wasn’t impressed with many of their figures (Gigan, G64, G89, GMK-Goji, G-68, and Godzilla 73) and found them to be lackluster/down right awful imo, with several Marmit MH figures (Gigan, G68, G73), Gigabrains (Gigabrain G64) and Bandai figures (G91, GMK-Goji) being better made figures imo. All these issues combined with their switching back and forth between 30cm and 25cm was an instant turn off for me.

Lately, however, I have slowly started to change my views in regards to these figures because, to be honest, I have spent just as much, if not more money hunting down some rare, hard to find Marmits, Gigabrains, and Marusans than what these things cost. Secondly, I live in Japan, and these things run for roughly $90-100...while this isn’t exactly cheap, it’s still *far* less than what people are paying for these state-side (and that doesn’t even include the high shipping costs as well), and as I mentioned, it’s on par with what I have paid for certain Marmits/Gigabrains over the past year. Thirdly, it seems that they (X-plus) are starting to hit their stride, and lately they have been producing better figures to justify their costs and, more often than not, are making them in the 25cm scale (aka 9 inches), which blends perfectly with most of my 8 inch Bandais, Marmits, and Marusans. With Showa Ebirah and the  on the way (in 23cm scale...why this odd scale and not 25?...I don’t get it :dunno: Oh well, no biggie), they are slowly starting to win me over with their products. Finally, Marmit/Gigabrain and Marusan have made next to zilch in their 8-10 inch figure lines over the past year that has been worth a crap (and Bandai completely abandoned their 8 inch line years ago). In contrast, X-plus can’t seem to churn these suckers out fast enough (I really think they should slow it down a tad...they’re expensive and it would give collectors some relief), so I thought it was kind of silly for me to not at least give this line some consideration, despite past reservations I had about them. Since I pride myself on my rag tag collection, as long as a figure fills a need/void in my collection, I don’t care who makes it. Anyways, here it goes:

X-plus Gonad-Goji 71

Awesome figure, and *MUCH* better than their 30cm G68 figure....no contest. I even love the little burn details on the eye and hand. Also, I am fed up and tired of looking for the Marmit MH figure, which has been impossible to find after searching for years in Japan (and whenever I have seen it, the price is far more than what I paid for this X-plus...never thought I’d actually “save moneyâ€

Got some new Ultra stuff today.

Image
Purple 2006 Mebius Vakishim and Barabas. I already had a Barabas and was going to sell one of these, but as it turns out this one is made of hard vinyl, while my first one is much softer. That's enough to make me keep both.

Shugalon, Kodolar and Gamaira. Terrific figures. I especially like the Gamaira. Thanks to my buddy Tim Crane for helping me get this.
