I worked in a library for 3 and a half years, and I gotta say a lot of kids learn from books believe it or not. When I was assigned the kids section to shelve and sort, Godzilla got quite the mention in those general movie monster books.
Also, the very best thing to assume is that Godzilla's appeal overlapped with Dinosaurs, which are very popular with kids.
It also is likely that the kids know about Godzilla because of the games for the Wii and DS, and the possibility that they have a relative who introduced them to Godzilla (like in the case of my 11 year old cousin who has know the Big G since he was friggin' 4 no thanks to me!)
