The Guinea Pig movies:

The Devil's Experiment is just a girl getting abused and tortured. For those who don't know, people thought it was a snuff film when it was first released. Very sick and pointless.

Android of Notre Dame at least had a plot, soundtrack, and recognizable actors (Tomorowo Taguchi, Mio Takaki). Still very twisted.

Gotta wonder about our Japanese friends sometimes.

Hellboy - eh... It was ok. I really have no idea as I've never read a single Hellboy comic, but it felt like it was probably pretty true to the source material. It had some interesting ideas and I think it could've been an absolutely stellar movie, but something about it just felt...lacking. I think the problem was I never felt like I got to know the characters enough to care for them. That & I never got a real sense of excitement from the action sequences. I also didn't care for the monster designs (why does it seem all Hollywood monsters these days are sleek/smooth/wet-looking things with dreadlock tentacles? Oh yeah, cause cgi still sucks at things like realistic hair and fur). But it was nice to see that some of the monsters were portrayed by men in suits. That was cool.

Yongarry - The original. I enjoyed this one. Despite the fact the it blatantly ripped off pretty much every giant monster series before it. (seriously, they practically cloned the shots of Godzilla crushing the Diet Building, Gyaos slicing a jet in two, Gamera sucking up fire, etc...). But, hey, they did get one original thing in there! Nobody in Japan had yet thought of tormenting a monster to death through rectal bleeding!

TOP GUN - The AMC megaplex down the road showed a 25th anniversary digital projection of this Monday night. It was totally awesome in all its cliched, cheesy 80's glory! I've loved this movie since I was a kid & finally seeing it on the big screen with a tremendous, thundering sound system was just perfect. If I had one compaint, it would be the same that I've had for almost every digital projection I've ever seen: it seemed a little too dark. Not quite as bright and vibrant as I thought it should've been. But it wasn't terrible. It really did look quite nice & was very film-like aside from that one issue. Kind of like the difference between a 75 watt & 100 watt bulb... if that makes sense.

But overall it was really great to finally see this the way it should be: huge & LOUD! I'm still humming "Danger Zone" to myself. And they gave out free TOP GUN posters & had a free drawing for the dvd!

Twister's Revenge

A man and a computerized monster truck save a girl from a trio of bungling kidnappers who make Larry the Cable Guy look like Bill Hicks. Take the Wisconsin filmmaker Bill Rebane ("Monster-a-Go-Go", "Giant Spider Invasion"), add the worst aspects of Hal Needham and Benny Hill, and you have this stinkypoo.

Bad. Very, very bad. Bad beyond all infinite realms of badness. And it's not very good, either.

Watched a ton of monster/sci-fi films last weekend with some friends, mostly Godzilla and Ultraman.

Super Inframan
Might Peking Man (first time I had even see it. It was dumb but very entertaining)
Godzilla vs Biollante (blu-ray)
6 Ultrabrothers vs the Monster Army (wow, what a piece of crap)
Ultra Galaxy Legends: the Movie
Mothra vs Godzilla (blu-ray)
The Ultraman Story (enjoyed it. Grand King was very cool)
Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster
Ultraman Zoffy
Monster Zero
Death Kappa (again, what a piece of crap)
Destroy all Monsters
