To get ready for the new one next month, I just watched the first three over the last few movies and thought it was time to revisit my thoughts (and yours) on them.
Curse of the Black Pearl - Easily my favorite of the three. It was fun, but it had a mature story with some comedy and action scenes that were great. Not to mention a fantastic soundtrack with some excellent one liners. It was just a great movie all around that really balanced the story, action, and comedy around.
Dead Man's Chest - The more I watch this movie, the more I see its flaws. I love the whole concept of Davy Jones, and Bill does a phenomenal job as the character. On the other hand, Elizabeth and Will did not need to be back as their story was done, especially Elizabeth, who was started off fine, and then she went completely off character during the second half of the movie. The biggest problem for the movie was that it had way too much comedy, all of which were completely rediculous. The music remained incredible, in fact, was even better than the first one's score.
At World's End - This movie is an absolute train wreck. There are too many plot holes, too many convolutions, too many off screen deaths, cop out deaths, and characters completely derailed personality wise (Elizabeth). How did the Kraken die? Why? How did Beckett get Jones to join him? How did Gov Swan die? I think the main problem is that it feels like they tried to combine two movies into one. Instead of two great movies, we got one long convoluted mess. There was a movie in there on killing Jones and a movie on the Pirate Lords, and that is the route they should have gone. Granted, I love the multiple Jack scenes even though they feel like they were written by a Japanese guy and made no damn sense, but at least Depp had fun with them. They did tone down the over the top comedy from the second movie, but even that cannot help this mess of a movie.
Overall, I loved the first one, like the second one, but the third one is only good for a few scenes. I just hope On Stranger Tides is more like the first one again instead of its sequels. With that said, how do you feel about these movies? Do you like them? Hate them?
