Hey Kiryu...do you have any more back story on why Toho is making Matt use only Hesei monsters for his covers? Not that I am complaining of all people...just curious...

After reading the comic for myself, many of the so-called "problematic" scenes came across acceptable to me. The fact that Godzilla killed some kids and stepped on granny isn't being malicious, but simply a consequence to Godzilla arriving and people being in his way. If that offends your sensibilities, you probably aren't a fan of...well anything where people die, including the original Godzilla. I have to wonder if the same people concerned about those scenes in the comic were equally upset watching Gojira (1954) when Godzilla leans over a building and vaporizes a car surrounded by policemen for no other reason than he felt like it? What about the scene with a young mother and her child trapped between burning buildings, hopelessly waiting to die? The total devastation of Tokyo, looking as if it were hit with atomic bomb? The hospital scenes with people dying and screaming?

These were scenes from the first movie, and really I don't see much of a difference. If you don't like one, you shouldn't like the other, and some of the critcisms about that are baffling, unless you only like the late Showa Godzilla films...and even then you must loathe Titanosaurus for stepping on kennies and you can't stand the thought of Hedorah (granted, the latter I actually understand).

The nuke is a plot device establishing 2 things: Godzilla's atomic link and his death ray, obviously we care about his atomic link more. That is what defines Godzilla. I'd prefer the original origin, but we should expect some aspects change when new stories come out with established characters. Is it uncharacteristic of Japan to use a nuke...? Well obviously, but that doesn't mean in fictional Japan it must be the same. I admit the whole scenario involving the nuke did seem pretty rushed - making a nuclear decision in about .02 seconds... I also didn't quite like the idea of Godzilla being nuked and then getting his death ray, but I'll get over it. Still, how some government offical (scientist, whoever it was) knows that the nuke is what gave Godzilla his ray is beyond me. This is first appearance of Godzilla as far as we know, so how does this clown know that Godzilla didn't already possess his ray prior to getting abombed? Couldn't it be Godzilla's furious he just got nuked, and now he's showing his wrath in between stepping on innocent bystanders with beams of death? Maybe that will be explained later, but for now it appears to be sloppy writing. It was obviously the intention to add Godzilla's ray via the atomic attack, but it still doesn't mean it makes sense the scientist automatically knows this is what actually happened. He's never seen Godzilla before; he doesn't know if Godzilla farts lasers or otherwise.

On that note, the dialogue was pretty awful in a few places. I'm probably going to have a recurring nightmare in which satan tortures me by saying "you've gotta be #@!%ing kidding me" over and over and over. It was meant to lighten the mood, as were the islam references, but it came across rather "meh."

The last scene of Goji torching Tokyo with people in the foreground was fantastic. Overall the artwork was good, especially the coloring, but I also tend to agree the eyes were distracting. Godzilla sometimes looked menacing, others goofyish. I say get rid of the pupils...it looked much better. The overall design of Godzilla I actually enjoy...a more pronounced neck with muscles and scales galore...a feline look, kind of crossed between heisei and GMK, with more jagged spikes? He's more slender than Heisei, but still pretty bulky, giving hiim a powerful stature. Kudos on that.

As for character development, we don't necessarily need that right away. I'd prefer we had it, but this is Godzilla's first attack of many. There is nothing saying they can't add characters in later issues...even if I agree the first issue doesn't make it seem that way.

In the end, there are things to criticize, but some stuff I really enjoyed..I especially liked Goji's design. They're already light years ahead of GINO with monster design, his beam, and the fact he isn't killed by missiles. I'm looking forward to seeing how aggressive gets and how brutal he fights can potentially be...I loved how Godzilla was portrayed in Goji vs Biollante, ruthless until overcome by the ANEB...I'm hoping that is route they go here. From the last panel we see, it sure looks like it.
