Kaneko's not all that bad...only when he gets bogged down in his "everything HAS to be super-spiritual and significant" stuff...(like in GMK and Gamera 3)
when he lets the story stand for itself, and be poignant only when necessary/it makes sense (G2, Death Note) then he's quite capable.
i like GMK, but I don't like it as much as my favorite showa films or my favorite heisei film (Biollante - it's the only heisei film that i ADORE)...but it is one of the only Millenium-era films that does something other than just exist (a criticism i've leveled at G2K many times) and seems to have some sort of POINT.
(also, I personally really like Gamera:GOTU...it's Gamera 3 that I [blasphemously?] am not the biggest fan of)
