Gamera vs. Barugon

Good movie, haven't seen it in a long time.

Godzilla 2000

You know, I think I have a new found appreciation for this film. It actually isn't too bad of a film, I think. The scenes with Godzilla are just so fun and jam-packed IMO. Some of the dialogue in the film does make the film kinda boring at some parts. Overall, I love it!

The Cameraman

Buster Keaton's first movie joining the MGM studio after years as an indepdent filmmaker, a relationship that would see him robbed of creative freedom and is usually blamed for his descent into alchoholism - but, forgetting all that, this first movie is still very good and still in the style of his previous films.

As a matter of fact, it feels very much like his last self-produced film, Steamboat Bill Jr., as it's merely okay for most of the runtime only to ratchet up the comedy and spectacle in the last half hour for a great finish. The last act also sees Keaton acquiring an organ grider monkey as a kind of animal sidekick!

Murder by Death

Goofy mystery fiction parody from the '70s where Truman Capote (yes, he acts in this movie) invites the world's most famous detectives to solve a murder mystery. All of them are parodies of fictional detectives: Nick and Nora, a Humphry Bogart type (played by Peter Falk!), Perot, Miss Marple, and Charlie Chan. The Chan character, played by Peter Sellers, is the highlight of the film as Sellers plays the character as a parody of yellowface - essentially playing a white person playing a Chinese person!

It's fun, but it could have been much, much better had the mystery been more complicated and exciting rather then just all the characters roaming between two or three rooms and finding obvious red herrings untill the hasty conclusion.

-Blue Valentine- A boring movie about two boring, insufferable people being awful to eachother. Can't see what anybody sees in this garbage. Its Revolutionary Road without the class.

-Mark of the Vampire- Directed by the great Tod Browning and starring Bela Lugosi!! Wait, too bad it sucks. This movie is a bore and a half with an awful Scooby Doo plotline. Its a remake of the lost movie London After Midnight, and if this version is as tru to LAM as they say, I think I'll be able to deal with it if they never discover that film. Browning was a fantastic, influential director, but I don't think he adapted out of the silent era very well. Aside from Dracula (which he really didn't even direct) and Freaks, I haven't seen any talkie work of his that was the least bit impressive.

-Mad Love- Peter Lorre's English speaking debut is an ok, pulpy horror flick. Lorre is great, but the story really didn't do much for me, and I found Colin Clive surprisingly boring as the hero.

-Half Human (Japanese version)- FINALLY got my hands on a subtitled copy of this banned, lost Ishiro Honda film from the golden age of Toho monsters. I've had a raw Japanese copy for a couple years, but finally, someone had the decency to subtitle it. Even though the human cast gets kinda lost in the shuffle in the middle, this is a great film. If it wasn't banned, there's no doubt in my mind it would be considered a classic up there with Gojira, Rodan, etc. The nature of the monsters is extra heartbreaking and even poetic in this film. Also, this movie, almost more than any other show the massive influence that King Kong and Mighty Joe Young had on Honda/Tsuburaya. And the ape creatures look great. If only the Toho Kong suits looked this cool. Seeing an old school Toho monster flick that I'd never seen before made me feel like a kid again.

I've watched a few flicks recently.

Suck
- I found this movie to be cute. Not great, but amusing enough to be entertaining. A rock band is struggling to make it in the music biz when one day a really obvious looking vampire walks into the club they're playing at and goes home with Jennifer, the female bassist. She gets bitten by him and turns into a vampire. Her band members notice she's different but they don't think much of it until she starts getting all the attention at their shows, which begins to increase their popularity. Eventually her secret gets out and now the band must cope with her vampire tendencies, as well as take advantage of their growing popularity as a result of it. Meanwhile, a vampire hunter (Roddy McDowell) is hunting them down. The movie had cameos by a bunch of musicians and had some pretty funny moments, including when they kill an annoying radio DJ (Henry Rollins) who insults their music while live on air.

Piranha 3D - This movie was hella funny and i'm kicking myself for not watching it in the theatre when it was out! It was a great throwback to the older animal attack movies, and the death scenes were bloody, gory and hilarious. I loved many of the non-piranha death scenes, such as the guy getting his head smashed by the crashing boat, the bimbos getting sliced in half by the cable, the chick getting her face ripped off when her hair got caught in the motor of the boat.... some really funny stuff! They don't make enough fun horror movies these days so this much appreciated.

Forbidden World aka Mutant - Sci-fi low budget trash about a research team that's menaced by a mutated monster. The hero gets down and dirty with the 2 bimbos, all accompanied to some cheesy music, and from what little you see of the monster it looks like a mouth with a bunch of spider legs. I also laughed that the walls in the corridors are lined with styrofoam boxes (like the ones hamburgers come in) and paper cartons that you stack eggs in. Yet despite all this silliness it's still a fun flick if you're in the mood for something sleazy and cheesy. They sure don't make 'em like this anymore!

Up From The Depths - I remember this movie was on tv a lot when I was a kid. I never really sat down and watched it but had always heard and read that it was bad. And was it ever! It's a ridiculous story that's big on a bunch of idiots arguing and little on monster action. A prehistoric fish monster is eating people at a Hawaiian resort. Most of the attacks are someone swimming in the water, a very brief shot of a fish head with teeth, and then the camera starts shaking while the screen goes red to make it look like the person is getting eaten. Then there's a few shots of 2 Jaws-like fins in the water. None of the characters in this film are very likeable and I wish they'd all gotten eaten. I would have at least liked to have seen more footage of the monster instead of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it scenes it got. This movie is BAD!!!!

Demon of Paradise - The other film that's double featured with Up From The Depths, this one is more entertaining and you get more monster action. A reptilian creature is terrorizing another resort, where a scientist and the sheriff team up to try and stop it. It resembles a reptilian ape with a tail and spikes on it's head that make it look like medusa. You get a good amount of footage of the monster, and he causes some havoc, like rocking 2 different boats that result in dynamite explosions, and he even jumps out of the water and drags down a helicopter. This is a decent late 80's flick and saves the double feature from being a total bust.
