I saw this over the weekend at the Redwood City International Latino Film Fest: La Pantera Negra. Shameful self promotion of my blog, you can read about this very interesting and existential sci-fi/fantasy/Noir/horror/hard-boiled/comedy , where there's some pics and the trailer. It's just playing in festivals right now, but I highly recommend it if you can track it down.

I recently watched a bunch of DVD's that I bought.

Trick 'r Treat - I finally got around to watching this Halloween-themed horror anthology. It was really enjoyable and I liked how the stories were interwoven. It kept the fun spirit of the Creepshow films. Now I understand why everyone was talking about it so positively.

The Evil - 80's produced Roger Corman flick with Richard Crenna as a college professor who takes his students to do some work on a house that turns out to be haunted by evil spirits. This movie was really hokey but also very funny. It's great if you're in the mood for a cheesy 80's flick. Victor Buono appears at the end and gives such a ridiculous performance as "the devil" you have to see it with your own eyes.

The Terror Within - Another Roger Corman 80's flick, this starred Andrew Stevens in a post-war future where some survivors are having to fend off against mutants they call gargoyles. They go to an abandoned human campsite and bring back a female survivor, who turns out to be pregnant by one of the monsters and when they attempt to abort the baby the film majorly rips off Alien by having the monster baby come alive and disappear in the facility, and it's up to the gang to find it and kill it before it gets them. The movie still managed to be a bloody, fun entertaining rip-off.

Dead Space - The movie that was double featured with Terror Within, this one starred another 80's has-been, Marc Singer, as a fighter in space who gets a distress call from a facility and goes to investigate. He and his robot companion arrive to find out that it was a false alarm. But he can't leave after his ship was damaged in a very cheesy (Star Wars rip-off) fight in space with enemy ships. Turns out the scientists are growing a thing that comes alive and, just like in Alien, escapes and starts to grow, killing the crew members one by one as they scatter to find it and kill it. This movie was also fun and campy, and the monster was kinda cool looking, like a cross between a dinosaur and a spider.

Madman - The 80's slasher about some camp counselors being terrorized by a local legendary killer known as Madman Marz. Gee, a lot of camp counselors were killed in 80's horror movies, weren't they? But this was a decent Friday the 13th rip-off, with some fun, creative killings. My favorite was a girl who gets decapitated by the hood of her truck.

Horror High - This 70's cult classic finally gets an official uncut, widescreen release, instead of the pan and scan edited-for-television version that's been available for a few years, usually in a bargain pack with other flicks. It tells the story of Vernon, a bullied nerd who one day creates a formula in science lab that he's forced to drink by a bully janitor. It transforms Vernon into a Hyde-like psycho killer that quickly kills the janitor by dumping him in a big can of acid. Vernon then goes on to kill others who have tormented him, including his "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" english teacher, P.E. coach and the football player boyfriend of the girl he has a crush on. This is a fun flick and the uncut version shows all the blood that was absent from other version, including the english teacher getting her fingers chopped off by a paper cutter. I remember seeing this movie as a kid under the title Twisted Brain and always liking it.

Watched Harry potter and the Order of the Phoenix on tv last night. B-. I feel like it has less cringe worthy acting than Goblet, but it has some pretty terrible looking shots. CG looks a bit wobbly in places, and with what was cut out of the story from the book, the film doesn't seem to work as well. Still, slightly better than Goblet.
