Aliens
If given the choice between the first two Alien movies and the entire Alien and Predator franchise, I'd take the first two without a moment's hesitation. And forced to choose between the two films, I'd take James Cameron's fast-paced, action-packed sequel over Ridley Scott's horrific masterpiece. While neither film can really be directly compared, I just enjoy Aliens more. It's my all-time favorite movie, period. And much like its predecessor, there's almost nothing bad to say about it.

The cast is solid and likeable (or, in Burke's case, hateable) and they know their roles well. Sigourney Weaver offers a further developed version of Ellen Ripley. Whereas in the original film she was just a terrified member of the Nostromo who managed to survive, it was this movie that turned her into the Action Hero she's known as today while showing just enough of her vulnerable/motherly side. Michael Biehn turns in a solid performance as Dwayne Hicks, a competent soldier who manages to be a strong character without overshadowing Ripley. Unlike many people of this type, he's actually likable ( ). Paul Reister's character, Burke, is my least favorite. But that's actually to his credit. I found his character convincing enough as a villain that I was genuinely disappointed when I didn't get to see him get ripped apart by the alien. Bill Paxton brings in the comic relief very well. Newt (Carrie Henn), Bishop (Lance Henriksen), and Vasquez (Jenette Goldstein) all fill their roles just fine, and manage to be very entertaining, but there's not much to say about them.

While people have expressed disappointment at the evolution of the original Alien to a swarm of creatures, I feel it was the next logical step. A singular alien picking apart the team one-by-one would be nothing but a rehash of the original. The facehugger creatures return and the Alien Queen is a truly frightening creation, very on par with the original monster. The special effects are magnificent. There's honestly very little wrong with them. And Horner's fast-paced score fits the movie very well. And even without the horror elements, we still get plenty of gore with the chestburster scene and the many instances of soldiers blowing aliens apart.

One reason why I think Aliens succeeds so well is because it doesn't follow in the steps of the original. Cameron makes his own film. It's not a horror movie - it's a suspenseful action movie with a science-fiction theme. And it brings with it a strong cast and script, a strong musical score, excellent effects work, and Cameron's great direction.

Awesome movie, definitely. Give me this movie and Ridley Scott's film and you can keep everything else.

Just finished watching Murder, He Says (1945) -- starring Fred MacMurray, Helen Walker, and Marjorie Main. TCM premiered it last night on the channel -- it's a great comedy, I can't believe it hasn't had a DVD release.

The movie takes its title from the song "Murder, He Says" sung by Betty Hutton, which spoofs the slang use of the word "murder" for just about anything.

Video of the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClGNm89GZBE

Unlike the song, the movie does include murder; MacMurray's character is a representative of the Trotter Poll and has been sent to try and find another pollster who went missing. MacMurray's character runs afoul of Ma Fleagle and her boys (Ma keeps order with a bull whip, and Main's performance very likely informed that of a later fictional criminal mother) who are searching from the money from cousin Bonnie Fleagle's last bank heist.

Keep an eye out for TCM to re-air this, it's great fun to watch.

The Mummy. The real one with Boris Karloff, not that Brendan Fraser garbage. Not exactly what I was expecting (I had never seen it & avoided all spoilers so I went in with basically no knowledge of the film). I had envisioned more mummy in wrappings chasing (or at least, slowly walking after) people in the halways of Egyptian ruins type stuff. But, while the movie is far from what I thought it would be, it was still quite good. I'm not much for remakes, but I could totally see a REALLY awesome suspenseful, erie, mystery type movie made from this... Maybe if someone had gotten to it back in the 80's the way John Carpenter did with The Thing From Another World...

I got the disc from Netflix & it was disc one from those awesome green dvd sets of classic Universal horror from a few years back that had like EVERY movie they made featuring each character... It of course had many other movies on the menu, but only the original was on disc one. Sadly, it looks like the other discs from this set (the legacy set I think) are not available through netflix, but I think I found other versions of them.

The Mummy (Hammer version)

I think that Universal has the Brits pretty much beat on the Frankenstein and Dracula front - I mean, I love the Hammer versions, but no one beats the Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff Dracula and Frankenstein Monster

.... but I never really cared for the original Universal version of The Mummy. I far prefer this Hammer version, which features the great Cushing/Lee combination and has a really cool musical theme.

Critters 2 - this one hits in ALL the right places.

also, it is BY FAR the absolute BEST Easter film in the history of the universe.

Session 9 - I watched this on a recommendation from MULTIPLE sources.
At the start, i was kinda disappointed. seriously, what late-teen kid in 2001 sported a mullet????

but, it turned out to be a really creepy, really totally decent film.

it's even more terrifying by my own particular interpretation

SPOILER ALERT
my interpretation being that Simon isn't an alternate personality, but rather an ENTITY and he took control of Gordon
END SPOILERS

i liked it

Hundred Beast Sentai Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai

Nice way to incorporate that year's Super Sentai team with various predecessors, and a salute to all the shows in general. Hiroshi Miyauchi still rocks the white suit.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across The 8th Dimension: This brought to mind an old MST3K riff... "this film takes the bold step of not including the audience". There are some amusing moments, for sure, but the accompanying action isn't exactly the best that the 1980's had to offer, and overall, it comes off as a forced attempt to create a pre-fab "cult" film.

Jackass 3-D: The first film of the recent wave of 3-d pictures that I actually bothered to see in the cinema, and indeed, the only one that I was actually looking forward to! While not quite as inventive as the previous big screen outings, and with many shots that are not even in 3-D at all (most of the hidden camera routines, in particular), I still laughed like a "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" at the film. The true stereo shots work extremely well, in particular when the stunts result in, ahem, "debris" firing towards the camera. I'm particularly amused by the unexpected manner in which they incorporated Dave England's on-command mud expelling ability...
