FINALLY saw this, goddamnit. And I thought it was pretty darn good. Its SURPRISINGLY well made. I was expecting something pretty schlocky, but its actually one of the most suspenseful films I've seen all year. This movie had no right to turn out as good as it did.

Its also pretty funny. I'd consider it a black comedy, but probably the BLACKEST comedy ever made, even blacker than Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I'm kinda hesitant to tag the film as "torture porn." This movie leaves A LOT to the imagination, so I really don't feel that "torture porn" is an accurate label for it. Like the best horror films, it leaves the scariest stuff in the head of the viewer. I actually found the most disturbing part to be the part where the doctor is merely EXPLAINING what he is going to do to them, rather than anything that the film shows... and that's a compliment to how much this movie messes with your imagination.

If you're a horror fan looking for original and more imaginative films and think you can stomach the premise, I highly recommend this movie. Its not for everybody, but whether its for you or not, there's almost no denying that Tom Six is an interesting and talented new filmmaker for horror. I'll definitely be following his career.

Not sure how often I'd watch this, but I'm somehow compelled to buy it on Blu-Ray.

VERY curious how the "medically inaccurate" sequel will turn out. Will it go the Evil Dead 2/Texas Chainsaw 2 route and just go WAY over the top and crazy? Will it be as subtle as the original, but with more fantastical situations? I'm really curious... but whatever it turns out as, I'll be watching it for sure.

I remain open minded about the sequel. There's really NOTHING we have to go by except for Six saying it will make the first one "look like My Little Pony" and a tongue in cheek teaser that just plays on the first film's reputation. So we'll have to wait and see.
