It looks good. I'm a huge fan/proponent of bluray, but it's gonna be hard to get me to double dip on this one. Not because the bluray isn't spectacular, but because they did such a fantastic job on the dvd! If I had a bigger tv I'd be more inclined, but with a 42 inch plasma, the difference (while definately noticable) isn't big enough for me to run out & buy this day one. If I didn't already have it, it'd be a no brainer. I'm sure I'll still get it eventually, but probably not until either I have a much bigger tv (or home theater projector...) or I find it on sale fairly cheap.

Plus, an art house theater in town is running a 35mm print of this in late october.... now THAT i'll be lining up for!

I really hate to say it -- but I don't think I'll be in a rush to pick up the Blu-Ray either as I already have the fantastic DVD release. (I bought the Collector's Set that also came with Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young).

The high definition transer looks great, and it looks like the new transfer for the Blu-Ray release includes a bit more picture on the sides (most noticable in the screen shots with groups of people). The menus for the Blu-Ray release look good too.

Kinda off topic here but I always loved this picture

According to the book The Making of King Kong, that extra playing the Skull Island native was genuinely terrified of being put into the mouth of that giant Kong bust. He ran off the set after the scene was completed.

That photo is my new desktop image!

On the subject of BD vs. DVD; if I had a Blu-Ray player, of course I'd buy it. I don't forsee a circumstance where I will not want to trot out "Kong" at least once a year, and with that being the case, I want it in a format that looks as close to the original film* as possible.

(in "Kong"'s case, a dupe negative is the best surviving element, but whatever:P. This new Blu-Ray is a brand new scan of the same element as the 2005 DVD.)

Some more comparisons:
