I was over at Voltron.com's forums earlier. The live action movie hasn't been scrapped, it's still being worked on. Hopefully the new cartoon will be done well, and it'll light a fire under the movie project.
In the meantime, I noticed a news post on the Voltron forums that WEP was looking into making an OVA in the vein of DC's recent direct to video movies. It'd be great, if WEP really does release an OVA, I'm sure there would be ample buyers especially if the new cartoon series raises general awareness.

Joblo has added a third picture -- this new one is of the Blue Lion in a hangar of some sort with what appears to be crews doing final touches. Hit the link to see the full hi-res image. I really wish Joblo hadn't ruined the images with the website stamp...

Overall, I like the look of the Blue Lion over the boney/skeletal look of the Red Lion (at least what we can tell from this angle). Judging from the artwork so far not only will the movie take place on Earth but it looks like the Lions will be built on Earth as well (disappointing if true). Hopefully they'll move away from the movie-Transformers look and closer to the original Voltron Lions' look (not that the movie design would have to match Toei's exactly, just be a bit closer). At the very least, these concept images are recoganizably Voltron (whereas the movie Transformer designs weren't recognizable as TFs).
If the movie absolutely has to take place on Earth -- I'd much prefer that the Lions be of alien origin; say they were brought or sent to Earth millenia ago and hidden around the planet (or lost/forgotten about).
The Green Lion could be in the jungles of Central or South America, the Red Lion could be somewhere with high volcanic activity (Iceland perhaps?), have the Yellow Lion in Egypt somewhere (buried under the Great Pyramid/Sphinx maybe), have the Blue Lion in Atlantis (or in a surviving Atlantean facility), and since the Black Lion was hidden within a winged lion statue in the show have it buried somewhere within the former Babylonian Empire (maybe even duplicate hiding it in a winged lion statue).
