I picked up this 2 disc DVD set a while ago...here are my thoughts:
The DVD cover and inside container design is *atrocious*...one of the worst I have ever seen on any DVD release. Seriously, the Mothra DVD was severely smudge/nearly damaged due to the crude way they are packaged inside the DVD (ie just stacked on top of each other)...it wouldn't play in my DVD player without freezing/skipping. Thankfully, I ran it under some water and that seemed to do the trick. Having gotten that complaint out of the way...
...this was a solid release all around :th-up: It had been years since I saw Battle in Outer Space, and while it's one of my least favorite SFX films from TOHO's "golden era", I still enjoyed seeing it again...even a "bad" showa TOHO SFX film is still more enjoyable than most heisei/millenium film. As with the Classic media Godzilla DVDs, the commentaries for it and Mothra by Ryfle and Ed G. were a treat to listen to. I had never seen H-man before, so its inclusion was a major treat. The transfer looked good as well.
Sure, it would have been nice to have some extra features like the Classic Media/Tokyo Shock DVDs, but considering this is Sony, it's amazing we even got commentary. Overall, these 3 discs are definitely one of Sony's better efforts (except for the my complaints about the DVD cover/package design).
It's really a shame that Sony couldn't give this same treatment to all their Godzilla DVD releases.
Does anyone know who has the rights to Gorath? Is it Sony? :dunno: I was disappointed that it wasn't released in Tokyo Shock's recent TOHO DVDs, so I was wondering who is sitting on the rights.
