I'm quite lucky that my wife is super awesome. When I met her she was a Star Trek fan. She wasn't a "trekkie" so much as just really enjoyed the shows (TNG & Voyager being her favs). She likes typical girlie stuff (Jane Austen, pretty much any BBC period drama) but she also loves scifi. In particular, 1950's alien invasion movies & their parodies like The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra.
All of that results in her enjoying at least some of my obsession with giant monsters. I don't know that whe would have ever watched one on her own, & I know that meeting me encouraged her to let her inner nerd blossom, but she does have fun watching them with me. She naturally likes the more fun spirited & quirky ones the most, just like she laughs good-naturedly at the goofiness of 50's alien movies. She also got a real kick watching Return of Godzilla after we got back from our Japan vacation & spotting all the places we had been in Shinjuku (including the building Godzilla falls into unconscious & subsequently uses to squash the SuperX). She's watched every Godzilla movie at least once, gone to G-fest with me twice, & gave me a "Godzilla Day" for my birthday while in Japan on that vacation where we did nothing but Godzilla related things (seeing places from the movies & going shopping for Godzilla stuff).
And she also loves Star Wars (my other obsession, along with Indiana Jones). Again, she didn't really know much about it (had seen the '97 special editions) before meeting me. But her love of Star Trek & scifi along with her sense of adventure (we both LOVE to travel) caused her to jump right on board with this one. She loves Chewie, Yoda, & the droids & she's even come to me asking when we're gonna watch Star Wars again if it's been too long. (we usually watch the original Original Trilogy at least once or twice a year).
She also allows/encourages my collecting hobby. Our spare bedroom is used as an office & she's agreed to let me use it as my display room for all my toys/collectibles. She buys me stuff that she knows I want & surprises me with it. She's even bought me things that she knows I would never buy myself for various reasons but still really wanted (two of the more recent ones being the giant new Millennium Falcon from Hasbro & the 1/6 scale Darth Vader from Sideshow). She's also tracked down new comics/collectables stores & other fun places that I've not discovered just to take me there as a surprise. She calls those "Super Happy Fun Days" & they are!
So, yeah, she's awesome.
