Godzilla and our spouses (or significant others)

Postby Kaiju Nexus » Mon Jun 07, 2010 10:40 pm

My fiancee hates Godzilla. There, I said it. She kind of likes Gamera (she thinks he's cute), but generally finds Godzilla boring and dull. Ultraman? I'm not even going to bother trying...

Makes my heart ache.

However, I've read several posts on these forums referencing some member's girlfriends or wives as beings fans of Godzilla/tokusatsu films and series (if not at least simply tolerant to them). So I got to wondering how many of us have hooked up with those who enjoy our unique hobby or how many of us haven't.

Anyone care to share?

No significant other here. :P I did watch the original Godzilla with a girlfriend once, and she was honestly impressed with it. While I do regret most of that relationship, that's a good point worth noting.

My girlfriend is somewhere between We're definitely on the same page and
Likes at least some of it...

She liked the original Ultra series and a few Godzilla films before we met so having her watch the rest isn't so hard. She's not really as gung ho as I am about it, unless it's Godzilla vs. Hedorah or Monster Zero which are our favorites.

She seems to honestly like watching Gamera almost as much, if not more in some cases than Godzilla films. She detests Final Wars, Mothra, and King Seesar, but loves Jet Jaguar, Gigan, Hedorah.

As I said she's not as into it as I am, but it's nice that she has some interest. Enough that she wanted to go to G-Fest in 09 and was actively excited about this year. I feel like I would have been fine if she had just tolerated, but the fact that she takes an active interest in something that means quite a bit to me is really just icing on the cake. A giant monster cake.

My better half doesn't "get" kaiju films, pen and paper role playing games, comic books,or most movies made before 1990 for that matter(" wow...why do you watch all those old movies with crappy FX?"). That said...I've never been discouraged from any of those things..and while on vacation and so forth..we hit the usual geek places without one word of complaint. In fact....while we were on vacation in San Francisco, I was ENCOURAGED to buy an expensive kaiju related toy.(" I know you really want it.") Do I wish my better half shared a few more of my interests? Sure...but make no mistake...my better half is definitely the BETTER half and I'm a lucky guy.

I'm quite lucky that my wife is super awesome. When I met her she was a Star Trek fan. She wasn't a "trekkie" so much as just really enjoyed the shows (TNG & Voyager being her favs). She likes typical girlie stuff (Jane Austen, pretty much any BBC period drama) but she also loves scifi. In particular, 1950's alien invasion movies & their parodies like The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra.

All of that results in her enjoying at least some of my obsession with giant monsters. I don't know that whe would have ever watched one on her own, & I know that meeting me encouraged her to let her inner nerd blossom, but she does have fun watching them with me. She naturally likes the more fun spirited & quirky ones the most, just like she laughs good-naturedly at the goofiness of 50's alien movies. She also got a real kick watching Return of Godzilla after we got back from our Japan vacation & spotting all the places we had been in Shinjuku (including the building Godzilla falls into unconscious & subsequently uses to squash the SuperX). She's watched every Godzilla movie at least once, gone to G-fest with me twice, & gave me a "Godzilla Day" for my birthday while in Japan on that vacation where we did nothing but Godzilla related things (seeing places from the movies & going shopping for Godzilla stuff).

And she also loves Star Wars (my other obsession, along with Indiana Jones). Again, she didn't really know much about it (had seen the '97 special editions) before meeting me. But her love of Star Trek & scifi along with her sense of adventure (we both LOVE to travel) caused her to jump right on board with this one. She loves Chewie, Yoda, & the droids & she's even come to me asking when we're gonna watch Star Wars again if it's been too long. (we usually watch the original Original Trilogy at least once or twice a year).

She also allows/encourages my collecting hobby. Our spare bedroom is used as an office & she's agreed to let me use it as my display room for all my toys/collectibles. She buys me stuff that she knows I want & surprises me with it. She's even bought me things that she knows I would never buy myself for various reasons but still really wanted (two of the more recent ones being the giant new Millennium Falcon from Hasbro & the 1/6 scale Darth Vader from Sideshow). She's also tracked down new comics/collectables stores & other fun places that I've not discovered just to take me there as a surprise. She calls those "Super Happy Fun Days" & they are!

So, yeah, she's awesome.

"Likes at least some of it"

My girlfriend has always been a fan of dragons, dinosaurs and other larger-than-life reptiles (she's a die-hard Spyro the Dragon devotee), so she took a liking to Godzilla pretty naturally and we watch kaiju movies together every now and then. We watched Godzilla vs. Hedorah sometime last fall, and then over this past weekend she was tripping acid and asked if we could watch "that one really trippy Godzilla movie" again. Oh, I love her.

My now ex-girlfriend and I are still pretty much the best of friends, and I turned her into a pretty huge kaiju nerd.

Like some others have said, my wife borders on dislike to simply not caring... but she does encourage my weird hobbies like kaiju and comic book stuff. Moreso the comic book stuff, since she enjoys most of the movies if not the comics themselves.
