GAMERA FILMS COMING FROM SHOUT FACTORY!?!

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

Well, I am rather disappointed that the AIP version of Barugon isn't going to be on the DVD, but that's not stopping me from buying the disc. I've never seen the Japanese version, and the opportunity to see it in its original form, especially with such a high-quality presentation, is one that I as a fan cannot afford to miss. I've seen all of the Gamera films except Jiger and Super Monster, and Barugon is by far the best of the original run in my opinion, and maybe my favorite Gamera film period...and that impression comes entirely from the VHS tapes and garbage-quality Alpha DVD I've had to put up with with over the years. Can't wait for this one.

It's one thing to be disappointed because these releases lack English language versions. That's fine. But to shout "FAIL" about something like this is pretty sad if you ask me. And proves to me that no matter how these movies are released to DVD in this country some people are never going to be happy. Ever. And people say I'm negative?

I mean, cripes, in the '90s I know many of us were buying ripped-from-LD VHS bootlegs of these films with no special features other than trailers and (at least back when I was buying them) in raw Japanese with no subtitles. For $15. Now for less than that price we can get legit versions of these films from remastered, HD sources, subtitled with commentaries, featurettes and other extras with packaging far snazzier than the plain white boxes I used to get these movies in.

But that's not enough? We need the American versions too? Even though our options are faded AIP-TV prints or those awful Sandy Frank versions? If someone wants the American versions so badly go ahead and buy the Alpha and Retromedia DVDs. I'd rather have an amazing transfer of the Japanese version with special features without a poor quality copy of the American version getting in the way on the same disc.

It doesn't matter to me as long as I get great copies of the original Japanese films. Crappy releases of the English versions are fine enough to relive my childhood watching CRAPPY ENGLISH VERSIONS of these movies.

If you think this is bad, you should see some of the crap people are directing towards this DVD - and by extension the entire Gamera series - elsewhere.

Hey August, didn't the Sandy Frank version of GAMERA VS. BARUGON use the English International dub? Was this ever considered for the DVD release before it was decided to not include a dub at all?

Yes. Unfortunately, the elements Shout were able to obtain were unusable.

Isn't the Sandy Frank version of Barugon shorter than the Japanese version?
