If this film is released in summer 2012, sandwiched somewhere in between BB3, Spider-Man, MIB3, Star Trek 2, The Avengers, etc., then yes, it will be a modest hit.
If this film is released in Spring 2012, or August 2012, times when minor, not major, blockbusters are released, then it will be a modest hit.
If this film is released during November or December 2012, at a time when people aren't going to want to see a giant monster destroying a city and by extension killing people, it will be a modest hit.
But...
If this film is released where it has some room to make a splash and then breathe, get some solid word of mouth, and build an audience, then yes, it could be a big hit. And its sequel, especially if it features some combination of Mothra, Rodan, MechaGodzilla and/or King Ghidorah, will be a huge, record-breaking hit.
This film should be released the first weekend of May 2013 (Spider-Man, Iron Man) or mid July 2013 (TDK, POTC 2). That's where the big hits go. However, as Transformers showed, mid June is a good time too. As far as I know there is no other movie occupying that spot in 2012.
So yes, this film could be a big hit. Would anyone care to challenge that without resorting to "You're a 15 year old" name-calling?
