I saw Iron-Man 2 today, and Super 8 was one of the trailers shown.
And the idea occured to me that Super 8, given the apparent big alien creature angle, may be something of a companion movie to Cloverfield. And perhaps Abrams has the goal of creating a true sequel to both movies that pits the creatures against each other.
Probably just a random idea -- but the viral marketing parallel and a possible parallel involving portable "home" cameras seems like something to go on. That and Abrams regular refrenced the daikaiju genre as part of his inspiration for Cloverfield. While I think in Cloverfield Abrams made more of an American style giant monster movie rather than a daikaiju film, a giant monster vs. giant monster film would bring him into kaiju movie territory.
Even though the Super 8 creature is apparently far smaller than the Cloverfield creature, a sequel could account for that seeing as Cloverfield takes place in the "present". If Super 8 really does take place in the late 70s/early 80s then it could be possible for the Super 8 creature to survive and go to ground for the last 30 years and something about it's physiology causes to to grow to the Cloverfield creature's size. Either like the creature in 20 Million Miles to Earth or through metamorphosis.
And if for whatever reasons Super 8 doesn't do well, Abrams can always shelve a potential monster vs. monster movie and audiences would be none the wiser.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
