I think there's more than enough time for a 2012 release -- be it a summer release or a winter release.
I see the standard sort of benefits a summer release has for the upcoming Godzilla movie, but checking out the latest on the schedule at Box Office Mojo summer is already looking crowded. May has Avengers, Madagascar 3, and Battleship; June has the Pixar movie Brave and Star Trek nu-II; July has Spider-Man and Batman 3. So already several films already aimed at the same audience pool the new Godzilla movie would be fighting for.
I can't help but think that a fall/winter release (around Christmas, maybe Thanksgiving) could really showcase the movie. Releasing just before Christmas was a boon for Avatar (and many other movies) there's a nice big window of free time for people to go see and even re-see the movies.
Plus I think it would be good promotional sense for WB minimize parallels with the 1998 Sony movie -- in this case an (early) summer release.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
