The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.

So I just saw this movie for the 2nd time tonight and I'm still pretty much speechless. This is a perfect, dark adult fairytale loaded with subtext, symbolism, nuance and wonderfully creative visuals. It has an amazing cast, including Heath Ledger in his final performance and Tom Waits as Satan himself. It also took a lot of ingenuity in finishing the film seeing as Heath Ledger died in the middle of filming. In order to finish, they had to re-tool the script and add in the plot element of certain people changing when they enter the Imaginarium. To do this, they cast Ledger's friends Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law to finish the scenes. A very clever way to finish the film and something that doesn't come off as forced at all.

I'm a fan of Terry Gilliam's films and this feels like his grand masterpiece. The film that his entire career has been building up to. THIS is the type of film that deserved to have the money and technology that Avatar did... this thing in IMAX 3-D would have been one of the best cinematic experiences one could ever ask for.

See this movie. See why Terry Gilliam continues to be everything Tim Burton wishes he was. Its by far the best fantasy movie since Pan's Labyrinth. Anyone with any interest in fantasy films needs to do themselves a favor and see this ASAP.

Since this thread wasn't quite the hit I wanted it to be, I'm bumping it by telling you fools to check this flick out on DVD. Its a truly beautiful and breathtaking piece of work.

I picked this up today on Blu-Ray and plan to watch it on Thursday. It better be good because I paid $21 for this movie. Looks good though, and with Johnny Depp in it, it can't go wrong.

Well I can definitely say this was an excellent movie. It was well done, well written, and had some incredible visuals. I'm a little mixed on the ending, but overall the movie was well worth the $21 and is definitely a keeper. I think my favorite scene is when Mr Nick and Valentina were dancing with all of the glass floating in the air. That was pretty damn cool.

Not sure how I feel about this...

on the one hand, I do think it was really good and the way they solved the death of Ledger (which by the way [and excuse this overly long paranthetical pause] actually pisses me off. i mean, i know it's sad and all that he died, but what a selfish jerk to take his own life...seriously, suicide is the coward's way out and it actually makes me mad that he was selfish enought to do it...like i said, it's sad that he's gone because he was a great talent and had a lot to offer the world, but what a jerk) but i also think that the film is perhaps a bit lacking in that ledger isn't involved in the climax...also, i dunno how i felt about the climax...it felt kinda, well, simplistic

a liked the dark humor and the performances from the cast were fantastic but overall i just felt like SOMETHING was missing

maybe i just can't get past the absence of ledger...that honestly might be all that it is but i just feel like the end is missing SOMETHING, like a proper resolution to the parnassus/devil bet for the 5 souls - yep, now that i've allowed myself to ramble and digest (albeit for only a few moments as the credits themselves have JUST stopped rolling) I feel a bit cheated by the lack of a proper ending to the bet between parnassus and satan and any feeling of motivation about the devil's attitude towards tony shepherd.

it might sound a bit nitpicky but i kind of feel like those are linchpins of the story and without an answer there i can't help but feel like this movie was about 110 minutes of goodness with a terrible, tacked-on ending
